Possible obstruction: What to do?

So far I haven't had any major complications since my RNY surgery, and I'm almost 7 months post-op. But all of a sudden today, I am not feeling well. It started just before noon today. I ate about 3 oz. of hamburger meat and pickles. (Yes, that's odd, but I chew it well, and it always goes down fine.) About 2 hours later, I started feeling pain gradually more and more. It was definitely in the stomach region, and it was so bad that all I could do was curl up on the couch in pain. About an hour later, it faded away. Then, a while later, I decided to eat some yogurt. No immediate pain or anything, but just like the last time, the pain came back, and here I am, 2 hours later again, and it still hurts. The best way to describe it is, I feel like I've done 1,000 crunches or something. It's sore like that. So I drank some SF cappuccino (hot liquid) hoping that would flush things out, and all it did was make a bunch of gurgling noises. HELP HELP HELP! I dont know what this is, and I dont want to go to the ER for no reason. I mean, if it still hurts in the morning I will go, but has anyone had this experience before? Could it be an obstruction or is it possible that this could be caused by an ulcer or something? I dont know what to do.

Oh Cathryn, I'm sorry you're going through this. I would put a call into your surgeon. Is there a 24 hr # you can call? In the mean time, I would just be drinking protein shakes. Good luck, I'll say a prayer for ya. BTW - great new pic (avatar) you are doing awesome!

I feel a lot better now after I took a nap, and yeah, I've just been drinking protein hot cocoa tonight, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to call my doc in the morning. Thank you for the compliments, you're too kind! =)

Hi Cathyrn - It is so interesting that you posted this. I felt this way last week. I was even going to call my surgeon. I felt the same way - fine when I ate and then crampy, gassy and gurgly and muscle sore. I was even tender to touch around my rib cage/stomach. I was thinking the same thing blocked bowel. I took laxatives for a few days and have to say I feel alot better. I'm hoping that was all it was that I needed to be cleaned out. Hope you start to feel better..... Marta

Wow...you just describe me to a "T"! I thought the soreness was from working out...but my I was very sore yesterday around the bottom of my rib cage.....Maybe I will take a laxative too.

Thanks Marta! You are right... I guess sometimes we just need to flush things out. I am back to normal today.

I have this when I don't go to the restroom regularly. I just take some Milk of Magnesia for a night or two and it get's much better. You can get clogged if you are taking in too much iron. But you should check with your dr just to be safe. I hope you are feeling better soon! Lindy Beautiful new pic!

I was just hospitalized for this over the weekend. Call your dr right away. They need to rule out an obstruction which can be very dangerous. Hopefully you just need to get your bowels moving some more... Let us know what the dr says.
