Hamburger anyone?

Happy Thursday everyone, I am going out to dinner tonight with my husband and I'm dying to try a hamburger. I haven't eaten this since before my surgery and I've heard stories about not being able to handle the ground meat... Has anyone who's had surgery in Jan 07 (like me) eaten this successfully? If so, any tips? I've actually managed to eat steak (rib) that I don't overcook and I cut into very small pieces and then chew thoroughly. I can also eat white meat chicken (which is on the list of post-surgery, hard to eat foods) as long as I don't overcook it. I'm curious to hear about your experiences with hamburger meat. thanks! Beth

Hey Beth... I eat hamburgers all the time....sans bun of course. I usually put a slice of lettuce and tomato on the plate, the meat with melted cheese on top, sometimes I add bacon cooked crisp, and then condiments on the side so that I can dip each piece of meat and veggies as I like. I have no problems at all with ground meats....I am really nervous to try steak, though. Chicken usually doesn't bother me if it's cooked just right. Give 'em a try...I'll bet it's easier to eat than steak. Good luck! ~Suz

Thanks Suz, Yes I was quite pleasantly surprised that I could eat steak, but since it was one of my favorite foods I was determined! Truthfully, I don't enjoy it as much as I did pre-surgery, because of all that chewing and eating tiny little pieces! People have been amazed that I can eat steak...I'm tell them that I'm just very careful. Definitely don't overcook it! It also depends on the cut. I asked my butcher about various cuts that are juicier and/or easier to digest. I've actually also tried roast beef which I also handled well (although couldn't eat very much of). The first time I tried steak was pretty bold on my part as I was on a business trip in France in mid-April...I normally don't try new foods at a restaurant, just in case...if you are going to get sick from somethiing it's better if you are at home! I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to handle it - as long as I was very careful. Well, I guess then hamburger it is tonight!!!! I'm so excited. Hopefully I can eat more than just one bite..

Hi Beth - I've eaten hamburgers a few times minus the bun. I do fine. I add onion and tomatoe with mustard. It's yummy! I haven't eaten bread since my surgery though. Oh, I use the leanest meat too 93/7. I say go for it!

Hey Beth: I eat ground beef all the time!! And not just one bite! I enjoy it some many different ways..except in a sandwhich form of course! Good luck with your ground beef debut! I also don't really take any special precautions when I eat it...I am sure I don't chew my food as much as I should but I have not had any problems so...I dont worry about it. Let us know how it works out for you!

Hi Beth- We raise organic beef, so hamburger is one of the staples of our diet. I have been eating it since about 4 weeks out. I have never had any problems with it. I never eat it on a bun, of course, because then I could only have a tiny bit (bread fills me up QUICK), but I put it in a lot of casseroles, hamburger helper, chili, lasagna (I pick out the noodles) and spaghetti (again, I don't eat much of the actual pasta). Good luck and hope it goes well! Belle

Belle - do you live on a farm? How many cows do you have? Just curious. Gosh, you must be busy with the twins and the farm?

I try not to eat too much ground beef due to the recommendation from my personal trainer. However, I have been eatting it since I was about 3 months out and have not had any problems at all. I am also one of those that does not always make the pieces as small as I should. The way that I usually eat it is to put all of the normal condiments on it and wrap it in lettuce. I liked it that way before surgery and now I just love it. It taste so much better than the bun. Danielle
