How did you arrive at your goal weight? Did your Dr give it to you? Do you go by BMI? I was just curious how everyone picked their number. Thanks- Holly

Hi Holly, Good Question. I have yet to pick a goal. My Dr. told me everyone will be different. Age has to do with it also. But I think where you feel the best. I am 5' 2" and was told 125. I will see. Anyway if you go to where it says MY OH ( in red at the top of Obesity Help that your on right now) Click on that. Then when it comes to the next page you will see two squares under your little profile. One says About Obesity... The other Before and After Photos. Anyway ..in the box that is titled About Obesity go down to Weight Loss Estimator. Next. I put in my weight.. day of surgery and height and 100% then click calculate and it gives you a chart and how much you should weigh..according to them. But I still say whatever you feel good at. Sorry to write all of this in case you have already looked this up. I find new things every day on this site. Just wanted to share. Bye for now.. Roxanne

Holly- I am not 100% sure about my goal weight, which is 160. My surgeon and I discussed it prior to my surgery, and she seemed to be in agreement with that being a good goal. That puts my BMI less than 25, which makes her happy, and through my teens and young adulthood, that was the weight that I was happiest at. Of course I am now almost 34 and have had 4 kids, including 2 at the same time (you can relate of course!), so I am not sure how realistic that is for me now. I figure that I will get to 160, have the PS done that I want to, and then see where I am after that as far as my self-concept about my body image is concerned. Do you have a number in your head that just seems right? Belle

I just did it and it says 142- if I put in 100% for weight loss percentage. That sounds low to me- at first- but I'm sure it would be a very healthy weight for me. I just want something that I will maintain. Thanks!!! Holly

Hi - My goal weight is around 160 - 165, that is what the dr. would like, it puts my BMI in the normal range. However, I can't remember ever being that low. I'm 5'8" - and carry my weight really well. I've lost 86 pounds and I'm in a 14 bottom. 14/16 top. I can't imagine what size I will be if I lost another 65 pounds - a 2 ?? My goal is to weigh between 170 and 180. That was where I was able to maintain my weight for longest period of time. If I do get to 160-165 thats great, but I will be totally happy with 170 - 180. I talked to dr about this and they agreed it is best to get to a weight that I can maintain. Marta

Hi Holly, Good question. I just went by my lowest pre-kids, pre-fat weight...which for me was 145-150. I wore a size 5-7 at that time. My weightloss estimater put me at 142 at the lowest but I haven't weighed that since I was a freshman in high school...not too realistic a number I think. My surgeon agreed and thought that 150 was a good number to shoot for as long as I understood not to beat myself up if I could "only" get down to 160. He said that because I had a high muscle mass, and very broad shoulders and a deep ribcage indicating larger bones, that even 160 would be a great weight for me. I only look at BMI in relation to the weight to keep me on track with what the doctor's offices say I should be at. Either way, I will just keep moving along (and down I hope) and see where I end up and how I feel when I get there. I can re-evaluate what is best for me as the need arises. ~Suz

My surgeon's office gave me a goal weight. It is easy. Use a BMI calculator to find what weight for your height gives you a 22 BMI. For me that is 132 lbs. I haven't set a personal goal because anything under 200 seems surreal right now.

OK- well that explains how the OH site works- cuz 142 would put me at a 22 BMI- THANKS!!! Holly

My goal weight is 150. I was actually that weight for 3 years and maintained it until I had kids. For me that is a size 8 because I am 5ft 11 and have a large frame. My surgeon says that is good goal weight but I should expect 18 months to get there. That is a total loss of 170 lbs.
