Reading Labels

So I have been eating activia yogurt for lunch lately and had been eating the vanilla flavor because I am a plain jane....the other day I decided to branch out and try another flavor and got strawberry....had it for lunch today, did not really like it but I ate it cause I needed to eat and as soon as I finished the last bite, I decided to look at the label again (or at least I thought again), and why did this yogurt have 17 grams of sugar and 19 carbs???? in 4oz??? I was so horrified! My nutrionist stated I should have no more than 15 grams of sugar per serving to prevent dumping so I was freaking out!! I did not want to be sick at work and I still had 4 hours to go...So can some one please tell me why I did not get sick?????????? I am so upset that I did not dump off all that sugar! I want to dump from sugar so I will not want it. I have so many mixed feelings about my surgery right now that it is crazy. 1) I thought my pouch would be smaller, but I can eat about 4 oz or more at a time at only 4 weeks out 2) I obvisouly will be able to handle sweets and thought I would not be able to 3) I thought I would lose weight faster than I have Is it just me?? Thanks for "listening"

But seriously, I know what you mean about wanting to be afraid of sugar. I feel like that too, in a way. Luckily (or unluckily, however you look at it) I haven't had the "experience" of dumping yet.

You know Cathryn, I do some times think it is a scare tactic!!! I mean I ate 15 grams of sugar in that yogurt and did not get sick at all. That was kind of disappointing too....I don't like to be sick but I would like to dump so I will not eat too many sweets

Hey there! I've eaten a couple of things that I thought I should have had some dumping on (didn't read labels correctly) and didnt' have any dumping. Like you, I was dissapointed. I wanted to use the dumping as a tool not to eat the foods high in sugar or fat. Someone did tell me that just because you don't dump now, doesn't mean you won't in the future. SO, keep that in mind too! Now about your weight loss, I think you've lost 32 lbs in less than a month? OMG that's wonderful!!!!! Really, you are doing so good. I can eat about 4 oz of soup at a time, and I've heard some people as far out as me can only take a couple of tablespoons of food. I think everyone is different. I know I definitely can eat more than two tablespoons of food though!! So, no it's not you! You are doing good!!!

Thanks Janie...Technically, I have lost 24 lbs since surgery, 4 pounds lost the day before surgery when I had to do the colon cleansing (I know that is TMI) sorry and then I was working out but not eating right before surgery and between my inital consultation with my surgeon on Dec. 14 and the final visit before my surgery Jan 29, I lost 5 pounds for a grand total of 33 pounds gone forever!! I like reading when people post gone forever!! lol And the eating... I can eat solid food and it feels like I can eat 4 ozs...like tonight I had meatloaf and green peas...I don't know..but I am just going to keep making healthy food choices..and high protein choices and exercising to get the most bang from this honey moon period. Thanks for the encouragement Janie!!!

Its not just you!!! I feel like I eat alot too. Like tonight I had 2, yes 2, homemade tacos. I thought OMG how did I eat 2!!!! But then I looked at the nutrition label and saw that 3 shells are only 36grams, so 2 of them had to be less than 1 oz. Then I only put 1 TBS of meat on them for about another oz, and just a little sour crm., salsa and cheese. So in reality it was all under about 4oz. So I guess it wasnt really that bad. Like you I thought I'd be like some of the other posters who say they take 2 bites and are stuffed. Nope, not me. It is scary because I want this to work. Its alot less than we ate pre-op tho so I guess we're doing ok. Mary

Stephanie- It's not just you. I also have concerns. I ate an entire protein bar in one sitting today. I am able to eat WAY more than I should and I tolerate things that I wish I didn't. This is what I tell myself... To lose now- I will HAVE to measure and let my mind control the amount I eat- because my stomach sure doesn't. That way when pouches stretch further out- we will already be prepared because we will have been doing it that way all along. I also hope that things do change further out- I hope it's true about dumping inconsistencies- maybe we will dump on something else... I'm pretty happy about my weight loss- I NEVER lost this fast before... Holly

Excellent points Holly R!!! I too am going to by a kitchen scale so I can start measuring the amounts of food I am eating. I am excited about the weight loss too..even though I thought it would be faster than it actually is......

Stephanie, On the yogurt thing have you checked out Dannon Light & Fit. The Vanilla cream comes in a 4 oz container and has 3gr of total fat, 3 gr of total carbs, 2 gr sugar, 5 gr of protein, 60 calories, 25 from fat. It's the carb and sugar control. I never like yogurt before I had surgery but I like this pretty good, they also have peachs & Cream can't remember just what other kinds they have. As far as the losing wieght I have lost 28 lbs since surgery, but 3 inches from my waist, 3 inches hips, thighs, 1 inch arms and wrist. So everyone is different.....you are doing great so don't sweat it...you doing just great. Dannette
