Sugar Alcohols....what I learned between eating them then researching them

People who have undergone gastric bypass surgery, specifically Roux-en-Y (RGB), should be careful not to eat too much sugar alcohols as doing so can lead to "dumping" and intense internal body odor. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_alcohol" (this will be TMI I'm sure but I woke up in the night very, very gassey just like I was a few days after surgery. I just bet this was leading up to my throwing up this morning. Now I know more about sugar alcohols and why we might want to avoid them) Darla

I got curious about sugar alcohols this morning while I was at work, so I googled it. (Coincidentally) I'm glad I did, because I hadn't realized how many things in my kitchen that are "sugar free" have sugar alcohols. I hate that you had to learn the hard way!

You were very wise to look it up first. I know it's a blessing in disguise that we may not be able to tollerate sugar alcohols so I am saying "lesson learned" I'll tell you, I never want to feel that way again in my lifetime. I had cold sweats and the need to walk out in the night in the very cool air just to try to help settle down the Nausea. It wasn't until I had a very intense episode of vomiting (mostly dry heaves) that I started to feel better. It lasted about an hour....YUCKY!

Sounds awful. I don't think I've experienced anything like this yet. I'm sure I will at some point, but hopefully not. Can I ask a question... did your heart start racing? Because I experienced that feeling a couple days ago, but nothing else, and it eventually went away.

YES! My heart raced..it was unmistakable. That was actually what happened before the dry heaves set in.

Hmmm. Maybe I had a slight case.

Sugar Alcohols have always made me SICK SICK SICK. So I avoid them at all cost.

That just doesn't sound like any fun at all. I did know about the sugar alcohols as they talked about it at our group meetings. The hard part is not everything has it on the labels. Anna

Darla, Sorry to hear you experienced this. Glad you informed me. I am now wandering if I have been eating this stuff without knowing and getting lucky. I have had some bloating, flatulence...hmm and even a really bad odor in my mouth, which I chalked up to the ketones, because of the low carb diet. I will be checking out what I am eating now for sure. Glad you are feeling better now! Lindy
