Scared to eat now

Yesterday was my first day of foods that have some consistency. After I had my morning meal (very small portion of grits) I felt full for several hours, and was concerned about overfilling and not getting my liquids in. I called a friend for support (who's had an RNY) and she said she felt the same way at the begining, and that liquids are a top priority. So I pushed through, drank more liquids and after the full feeling was gone (a few hours later) I warmed my lunch and ate that. That was such a big mistake. I was sick and vomiting the rest of the day. I am sure I just over ate, in fact I ended up not getting 1/2 of my fluids in. My morning meal and my lost lunch were all I had. Today I am very fearful of eating and drinking because I feel like I don't know or understand my new "signals"...To be honest I'd rather listen to the grumble in the tummy and think it's gas and bowels moving than think it's hunger because I do not want to get sick again. I have no clue where to draw the line. Any advice?

Lori, it may of just been that your pouch did not like what you were eating for lunch. Apparently from what I have heard it is a fickle thing. One day it likes this the next it doesn't. You do need to eat though so just try smaller amounts maybe. So not much help, I hope you can figure it out soon. Keeping you in my thoughts and prayers. Anna

Lori, I'm going through the same thing. I've been adding one new food every day or so. Last night I tried scrambled eggs. I thought I was eating slowly, and not too much. About one hour after I ate I got a really full-to-the-brim feeling (not pleasant). I couldn't even take a sip of water and was afraid something was stuck. Then I got queasy and it all ended up coming back up. Yuck! So today I felt kind of bad all day. It's very confusing trying to figure out whether you're hungry or full--weird. I'm hoping all the sensations work themselves out soon! Jen

I am sorry to hear that...I guess it's all a guessing game from here, what our new stomachs like and what they don't... today I had issues with my fluids too, just try again tomorrow! Gina

Yeah this is frustraiting for sure. At our ages, I guess it's true, we are learning to eat all over again. It's like my center told me, after a person has RNY it reminds them of when a baby advances from only liquid to baby foods. One at a time to see how they react. If baby throws up, try it again in a week or so. So here we are infant-adults. It's not fun: I'm going through a lot while trying to adjust too. When I have a day that I just don't want to deal with it, I simply go for the foods I know I can handle; sometimes I think we need that break. I have heard that this gets much better in time and that may also explain why the more rapid weight loss happens in the first few months and slows down in about month 4 since we can tollerate so much better by then. I'm only speculating but I think I may be on the right track. Hang in there and know it will get better and easier. Darla

Lori, I am so sorry that you went through that. I don't know where to draw the line yet either. And like you, I would rather drink than eat. So I have been pushing the drinking. I won't worry so much about it once I can get all that fluid that I need in and a tiny bit more. But if I don't consistently drink, my mouth gets dry and my lips crack and bleed. Unreal. I am not complaining just wanting to feel the heal so to speak. I feel like someone standing in front of a microwave yelling at how slow it is. The weigh will come off fast but I want to speed race and be a couple of months down the road with all stitching healed and have already introduced new foods and know what I can and can't do. I keep re-reading everything but I still wonder about so much stuff and see how much my head has to do with it all. Hugs, Caters

Okay Lori, after last night I have come to the following conclusion: If I am experiencing any pain, discomfort, grumbling stomach, strange noises, etc., I will hereby assume that it is first and foremost....gas. I will not put food on it and I will walk and deal with it. I was so miserable last night. I had tripped over a pet during the day and although I didn't fall, I jarred myself pretty hard. I hurt. I couldn't find a spot to be comfortable on and I have been sleeping on my side since surgery but not last night. My sites that had been the entry points for RNY hurt and itched like they were being stretched. I took Gas X and a hot shower and eventually felt better. Before all this, I had though I might need to eat. But now I don't know that the rumbling stomach means anything since everything has been rearranged. Off I go to add more water. Hugs, Caters
