I have not had surgery yet but from what I have heard and from what the surgeon has told me. Lap surgery means it is a longer surgery but the down time is less as you don't have a huge incision that will need to heal. I can't remember for sure but it seems that I remember somone saying there is less chance to get infection as well which makes sense to me. I will be able to tell you more after my surgery on Wed as I am having Lap RNY. I would suggest reading all the different types of surgery boards. Good luck in your search and finding some answers!! Hi Kelly, I had laprscopic RNY last Wed. I had a lot of nausea immediately in the recovery room and continued to have that for a couple of days - managed by anti-nausea meds. I have some pain, but really it's very well managed by the Nortab (liquid) my doc has me on. If you've given birth before, the feeling in my gut is very similar to the feeling after having a baby, kind of like everything is loosey goosey and going to come tumbling out. I tire very easily and can fall asleep in an instant. Sleeping in bed gets to be a little uncomfortable in the middle of the night - mostly because I'm a tummy sleeper and not happy sleeping on my back...sleeping on my side gives me that "everything is falling out" feeling, so I kind of avoid that. That being said, my bed is MUCH more comfortable than a recliner, to me any way. I'm cold one minute and hot the next, but that may have something to do with going without my Synthroid (I'm hypothyroid) for a couple of days. I get a little dizzy if I sit upright for too long...like right now.... Food tastes really good. Water tastes REALLY good. I am not hungry. I don't have any desire to eat, mostly just to drink. Fullness feels like a tight pain in between my breast. Ok, must go lay down. Feel free to ask me questions, pm or email me.

Hi Kelly - I had lap rny on jan 8th. it will be 2 weeks ago on monday. I have had no problems whatsoever. My surgery was 1 hr and 15 min. i spent more time in recovery waiting for a bed. I was not in excrutiating pain at all, uncomfortable but not unmanageable. I was able to sleep on my side in the hospital. I sleep on my stomache now. I was off all pain meds very soon after i came home from the hospital. I even went back to work on this thursday. I started eating pureed food as soon as I left the hospital and have not have a problem at all. Of course the food amount is 2-4 tbps at a time. I'm not hungry or crave food. I do have a problem w/ water, it does not go down easy at all, but I can drink flavored water such as propel water. go figure. All in all it has been a very postitve experience in which I'm greatly relieved. You hear horror stories and I was afraid I would be one of those, but to my great relief I'm not (so far). I am even going to go out for dinner tonight and try to brave those waters...... Hope that this was helpful in some way - Marta

Hello Kelly, I had laparoscopic Rny on the 16th. My surgery went very well I was only in surgery 30 minutes that is how smooth it was. I had severe pain when I woke up but as soon as they gave me pain meds it was fine. I was given darvoset and that did not take all the pain away so I was given morphine . That took all the pain away. Now I have minimal pain mostly soreness. I have five holes where the lap instruments were inserted in my tummy. They have stitches and when I turn in cretin positions I feel the stitches pull and that is a bit uncomfortable. I am wanting to eat food but I can't I need to stay on clear liquids for another 4 days. I think if I could just have a French fry I would be ok. Oh well it probably would not fit any way. I am having a problem with emotions. I had lots of company in the hospital and after I got home no one came to vist me. I got so emotional that I started crying. And now I am mad and don't want anyone to come over. I don't understand these feelings I am curious if anyone else is experiencing them. Well I hope it helps answer any questions you had. Feel free to ask away we need to be here for each other. Warmly, Alice

Hi Alice, I'll come cry with you. I had no idea that you had pain you looked wonderful!!!!! We left Fresno Friday morning about 8:30. I didn't get your message until we got home after 2:00. I would have loved to come see you & go for a walk They sent me home with a jp drain tube. I haven't had any pain meds since they cut off my IV Thursday morning at 5:00 am. I've cheated a little with food. I had 1/2 cup of cream of wheat yesterday am & pureed bean & bacon soup today. Just can't tolerate jello or broth, although Swansons taste better than the bland stuff in the hospital. Hope you feel better soon & I wish that I were there to cry with you. I'll be back down alone for my next doctors appt. 2/7 I think. I was supposed to have an appt for my post op next wed, but there was no way I could drive down that soon. Steve goes back to work tomorrow, so they agreed for me to see my PCP next Thursday in Mt. Shasta to have my drain removed & my post op check up. Maybe when I come down on the 7th we can meet for some pureed soup. Take care & keep me updated & SMILE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lynell

i was up and walking 4 hours out of surgery lots of gassy pain, which was just awfull , felt like the worrst menstrual cramps .... otherwise some tugging and pulling pains with healing, which were painfull as all get out, you need to remember even though you have no outside show of the surgery other than a few butterfly strips your insides are BRUISED and beaten , its gonna take a few weeks to heal from that, let your body do its job . in talking wiht others who had open its well above the open procedure for healing and recovery though

Kelly I had my gastric bypass on the 10 of Jan 2007. I feel great.I had some pain the first day but after that I had none. The biggest thing is to walk... the gas is not good. I sometimes feel a little hungry but I think its the mind thing ...12 is lunch you think you need to eat. Just drink plenty of fluids and drink the protein shakes and I save you a plce on the losers bench.....would I do it again.....IN A HEARTBEAT>>> Pam
