January 11 Lap-Band - Hooray!
Hi, all. I'm getting a band on January 11, 2007! Is anyone else scheduled for this around then?
I'm terribly excited, and scared silly - have I picked the right procedure? will I suffer complications? will I succeed? yikes!
I'm guessing the next 14 days will fly right by, between all this excitement and angst!
Hello there. Congratz on your date. I understand your feelings it seems to be very common. Can you share why you chose the band? I am having lap RNY at the time I looked into this surgery I did not know about the band. and did not realize there were several options I only knew about the open RNY and the Lap RNY so I chose the lap I was told it was less evasive. So that is how my choice was made.
Hi! Congrats on your upcoming date, too! I chose lap-band because:
a) my major food issue is quantity;
b) the serious complication rates are MUCH lower with lap-banding (the risk of death or other major complication is around 1 in 2000 with banding, vs 1 in 200+ with RNY);
c) the slower rate of weight loss gives your skin a chance to shrink along with you (I'm not keen on trading tons of excess weight for tons of excess skin!); and
d) the long term weight loss with the band is very close to that of RNY.
I think all we can do is read, read, read and ask a lot of questions, though. Both surgeries work, so what really matters is how you eat and what you are comfortable with!
Take care!
I'm getting the lap-band on 1/26, I'm nervous lke you and excited. My hubby had his first so it makes it easier for me since I know what to expect.
I think we picked a good procedure. It's less invasive and it can be adjusted just for us. My husband lost almost 50 lbs the first 30 days. He could only eat cottage cheese, yogurt, a little chicken, chicken broth, and drink lots of water. He could have jello as well, but he hated it! After his 1st fill they turned him loose on food, whatever he wanted only less of it! Now his weight loss will be a lot less but steady. So I'm actually looking forward to the first month, it makes it pretty simple when you know that's what you can have. He got up and walked a lot in the hospital, took advantage of the pain medication in the hospital, but never took any pain meds when he came home. Our doctor had us refill it prior to surgery so he would have it. We're all different I guess, the only rough time is when your right out of surgery, your not feeling too wonderful, but I'm willing to feel bad to be healthier long term. Good Luck, let us know how your doing.
