Jan. 26th, my big day!
Sally,
Hi! My understanding is to decrease the fat on and surrounding the liver. Not all surgeons require this...however, I am told it helps the transition post op phase to be a little easier by already being on a liquid diet, also. For whatever reason, be happy you only have a few days to be on liquids!!! I am sure I will be happy when the liquid fast is finished. Best wishes on your surgery and recovery....take care.

I am having the lap band surgery on the 17th and have to start a liquid diet 10-days prior to the day. My surgeon said that this diet will shrink the liver which is right in the area they will be operating. It helps if it's smaller so it will be easier to keep out of harm's way. I am sure there are other reasons but from what I have heard from others having the surgery - it's common.
Lura, I may not have the same date as you, possibly not the same procedure, but I am here for you. I wish you the best and good luck with the diet. I am a little nervous about it myself!
Thanks, Lisa.
I hope it won't be that difficult to stay on track with just liquids. Please let me know how you are doing with the liquids. I was told to use Carnation Instant Breakfast, no added sugar, low carb. Can also use SF popsicles, and jello. ( Hope I can drop a few pounds prior to surgery, I feel so miserable since the holidays!)
I had first decided on the lap-band, but then changed my mind after talking with a friend that had the RNY. I have 150 lbs to lose, and was afraid I wouldn't succeed.
I wish you the best as well...Please let me know how you are doing post op as well. Will keep you in my prayers...

My surgery is a few days after yours so I don't start my liquid diet until the 15th. I've been told by others to expect a raging headache for the first few days, but that it gets easier. So, by the time you're feeling a bit better, I'll be in the grouchy phase
Do you have a specific amount of weight to lose? My surgeon wants me to lose 20 lbs. and I'm afraid that I won't be able to lose it all. I should be dieting now but I haven't been very good about it
Hi Laura,
I had to do the 6 month physician supervised weight loss gig. I think I lost a whopping 4 pounds the whole time and yo-yoed as usual! Hopefully that proved to my insurance why I need this tool to help me. Since I finished the 6month thing, I think I have probably gained an additional 5-6 lbs! It is so very difficult to lose weight, and if we could do so easily, we wouldn't be pursuing this surgery. I am not required to lose on the fast, but I will be weighed when I go in and I was told that I must do the fast or the surgery would not be performed. (How about that?) But I will do it, and hopefully my family won't suffer too much from my lack of chewing! LOL. (Or my chewing on them!!!)
As far as dieting now...I totally understand why it has been difficult. The Holidays are food and stress laden! Hope you can get to where you need and want to be. We will succeed!! Can't wait to be on the other side of surgery and losing weight.
Best Wishes,
Lura
Jan 26th is my day as well. Only I'm having lap-band. I see my surgeon on the 11th and I am to loose 10% of my excess weight. but they do not care how I do it! If there is a gain, they will re-schedule the surgery.
For me I have clear liquids after surgery for 4 days, then soft protein for about 4 weeks until the 1st fill. My diet is different than yours, sorry if I've added to the confussion!
I was just excited to find someone on the same date!
Good Luck, all will be fine, we're about to be losers!
