My little guy

I have been absent from the boards for the following reason; my little boy. As most of you know I have a 3 yr old son. He has been sick, he has asthma. This morning I took him in to the pediatrician and she gave him a shot of "Solumedrol" -( JM does this sound familiar) Well he got it right in the butt. Then he scolded the doctor for doing so. I have him on albuterol nebulizer treatments between every 2-4 hours and am taking him to the doc in the am for follow-up and the remaining half of his shot. After his shot I am going to keep him on "Flowvent" as a maintenance I think. I am so clueless to Asthma. I should have brought him in yesterday but I become so lax about his asthma and ear infections that it seams I have him on the docotr's office all the time. I feel so ignorant and am signing up for a class on asthma management at his doctor's office. I will more than likely be gone for a while, but will be back. Take Care! ~Norma~

I am so sorry. I have had asthma from the time I was 18 months old. I had to learn how to treat a child normally when I had kids. If I felt the littlest sick, a scratchy throat, a sneeze that felt funny, I have to go to the doctor and start on prednisone and antibiotics, or I end up in the hospital. So to begin with, here are a few things. One, if he starts to cough, he is starting to weaze and you need to act right away. Two, there is no small cold, it is always a trip to the doctor, asap. Three, he has to be on meds for awhile, daily. I would strongly suggest along with Flowvent, I would ask if he is old enough for Alevert. Also, he is old enough for Singular and should already be on that. Singular is the best medicine I ever had, got me off half my inhalers. If he can use an inhaler, he should have an Albuteral respid inhaler. Make sure they dont give you a generic, it doesn't work as generic, get the real thing. Hope this helps for now. Next will be making the house alergy free, no animals, no fabric curtains or rugs in his room. Vaccum every day with hipa bags. Then they should probubly start on allergy testing, to see what he is allergic too. Could be dust, mold, plants, animals or even foods. Then they can start giving him allergy shots to desensitise him against his allergies, I did this for 10 years. Started twice a week and ended at once a week. So, it is all learning and your son needs to learn too. You have to find a speciallist, no pediatrician, specialist. Someone that listens to what you learn and what you know is working and not. Also someone who listens to your son, he is the one who knows the most about his asthma. Take care and keep learning.

Hey Norma: {{{{{HUG}}}}} I am so sorry that your son is having health issues. As you know, I can completely relate. My son has never been given solumedrol but I have heard of it. It is great that you are going to take a class on asthma management...that is a great idea! It is such a scary thing for your kid to be sick...especially when they cannot breathe. Poor Jen Jen's kids suffer the same. Please know that you and your son are in my thoughts and prayers. Feel free to email me if you have any questions! All my love, Jersey Mom

My kids are in the LR getting breathing trreatments so I thought I would check the board. The only thing I would add to Kristi's response is that he should be on pulmicort long term. This is a steroid but it is devlivered through the neubilizer. And the dose is small but effective. A doc told me being on the pulmicort for 1 year has the same (bad) effects as if you were to take prednisone for a week. So it is a safe long term treatment. I am taking Nathanial to an ENT on 12/21 to have his adenoids examined. They are always enlarged and he has has some lymph problems ... Breath easy! Love to Kid Cali! God Bless! Jen
