OT - Controversial Topic
Good morning, Everyone!
Okay...this post is for those who are not easily offended! In an effort to try to make this board a little busier, I will try to post some current events information from time to time. Here is my offering for today...
This morning on my way to work, my local radio station, 95.5 WPLJ, was talking about Mayor Bloomberg (Mayor of NYC) and how, even though he is against the ban on Gays/Lesbians marching in the St. Patty's Day parade, he will still march, himself. This has been an issue for YEARS. Gays/Lesbians have been requesting to march in the NYC St. Patty's parade for as long as I can remember. I think it is terrible that they are excluded from this event...there is just no reason for it. Regardless, they have never been allowed to march.
To add some levity to this topic, I remember a song written by a WONDERFULLY talented songwriter named Rob Carlson. He wrote/sings a song called "God Loves the Irish" and it is one of the most brilliant pieces of satire ever (well, depending on your sense of humor)! I wish that I could post the actual MP3 because as fun as it is to read it, it is infinitely more effective when listening to it! Maybe I can figure out a way to do that because I do have the song somewhere.
When reading the lyrics, again, keep in mind that it is SATIRE and it fundamentally states how ridiculous it is that Gays/Lesbians are not allowed to march!
GOD LOVES THE IRISH - Rob Carlson
We'll be comin' down Fifth Avenue upon St. Patty's Day,
A great day for the irish all across the USA,
But begorrah, what is this I hear?
This cry and ballyhoo?
There's a bunch of queers again this year who say they're Irish, too!
Oh, God loves the Irish, unless of course you're gay.
If you are you won't be marchin' upon St. Patty's Day.
You can be a bum, a bucket of s****ure and that's okay!
But ya can't be Irish if you're gay.
Now the Order of Hibernians, those eminences gray
Have delivered this pronouncement upon the blessed day...
Sure a little bit o' heaven fell and nestled in the sea...
But you're goion' straight to hell for homosexuality!
Oh, God loves the Irish, unless of course you're gay.
That was their pronouncement as the pipes began to play.
You can be a con, a mafia don, we'll laugh it all away
But ya can't be Irish if you're gay.
Oh, L-E-S-B-I-A-N and S spells lesbians!
Chosin' other women for to mate with,
Divil a man can ever get a date with
L-E-S-B-I-A-N and S we say
It's a shame that these dames want to come out and march with us,
Lesbians... no way!
Now just ask Cardinal Egan, he's bound to set you straight
It's boyos like the Kennedy's that made this country great.
We don't allow no Peter Pan the wearin' of the green
And when we say "up the Irish," that isn't what me mean!
Oh, god loves the Irish
As long as men are men.
Except of course for leprechauns, we've never been sure of them.
You can be a bum, a bucket of s****ure and that's okay!
But ya can't be Irish if you're gay!

Hope this gave you a laugh!
Hey Jersey!
Loved the song!!! Too bad I couldn't hear it but it was definately fun to read and yes I agree we treat Gay and Lesbians as second class citizens here in the good ole USA. I have plenty of wonderful friends that are gay or lesbian and they are terrific people, I love them very much and I hurt along with them when they are teased, scolded and reprimanded for who they are. I once asked a co-worker who is lesbian if she had always felt that she was attracted to women, to see if it's something they "learn" or "choose" and she had told me that from the age of 5 she knew she liked girls more. So, this is who they are and they just want to be acknowledged as being just citizens of this country, they pay taxes, they support their community and they want the best for America...but does America support them...no! It's sad and I hope times will continue to change. Despite my religious upbringing, I know that Jesus came and preached to everyone...his message was about love; to love thy neighbor as thy self....we are not doing that! I would never trade knowing my flamboyant gay friend, I love him so and was so happy when he finally moved out of our conservative area to SF where he wasn't told by his employers, "to stop being himself while at work,". Anywho, that's my take I know there are others with more conservative views, and that's okay...just remember we are all wanting to be thought of as equal citizens...whether you think being homosexual is right or wrong, all people need to treated right!
