Lactose Intolerance?
I have been wondering about lactose intolerance, I was wondering if any of you were, or are since surgery?
If so what do you eat to get your protien in? Supplements? Strictly meats?
I have been getting tummy aches once in a while after eating... now, mind you, it could be that I still eat too fast, too much, or some stuff that isn't the best choice in meals... but I have noticed it after cheese, sometimes...
I dread the thought of being lactose intolerant, because I get about 60% of my protien from yogurt, string cheese, milk based supplements... etc.
It will turn my life upside down to try to work around it, but it might also explain some of the slow weightloss and yucky days I've had???
Just looking for a little education on the symptoms & diet for someone with this affliction.
Thanks for any help that you can provide!
Much Love,
Angela
Hi Angela! Get this- I can't have over 4 oz of milk totally or else I get all Hypoglycemic I have to have soy milk and have sadly kissed yogurt and cottage cheese good bye I can still eat block cheeses...
The yuckiness I feel is like my blood rushing through my body. I kinda get hot and then CRASH! I'm out like a light. I get sooooo tired and heavy. I thought I was dumping, but my doc says its Hypoclycemia- I get this with too many carbs too. So its the sugar/carbs in the milk for me
Try the soy milk, its actually not too bad! I had some vanilla with the special K red berries and was ok!!!!! Yeah!!!

Hey Chickie:
I wonder if that is what happens to me! When I eat certain carbs or attempt to have milk, I feel so sick and then I need to take a nap! Are those the symptoms? Never had this problem pre-op...but I can no longer drink milk...it brings me to my knees in pain. I have no problem with cheese, though...
Interesting...I wonder if that is my affliction, as well...
Hugs,
Jersey
I have to watch the dairy products. I still eat yogurt to get in the protein powder. But I double up on the protein powder. Like one 4-6 oz yogurt to two scoops of vanilla protein powder. I always feel a little yucky after I eat it, but it is a trade off. I wouldn't be able to get in all of my protein if I didn't do it. Sometimes I switch 4oz of skim milk for the yogurt and add some DaVinci SF syrup for flavoring. I also have to be careful of the amount of carbs that I eat. They make me icky as well.
If you do the yogurt protein, you will get in all your protein requirements and if you do it before bed, you go to bed, go to sleep, and don't feel the yuckys so bad.

Hi Angela,
I've become lactose intolerant since surgery. I use to drink a ton of milk products before surgery and now I can't. I use 8th Contient Soy Milk, Stonyfield Soy Yogurt & Lactaid Cottage Cheese. I recently tried the Keifer (sp) cultured milk product and it went down okay. I can eat cheese okay but I have to make my protein drinks with soy or water. Who knows I do my best to avoid dairy if possible though.

You know... & well, I learned on vaca, too... we are all a little (lol) gassy, but it seems like it is more so after eating/ drinking dairy with me. I will get a gassy bloated feeling, too... and a little of the weakness and flushed feelings. Not so much pain, but the bloating and gas can sometimes get painful.
After cheese, it is more of a quisey tummy, like it just didn't agree. I don't ever get sick, but I certainly have to stop eating, and don't feel like eating again, even if I was really hungry before.
I wonder, too, like I said, if it is a reaction within my body to the lactose, maybe that is why my weightloss has been so slow this whole journey??? That the milk and dairy is hindering my efforts...???
Just wondering if it is possible, I guess.
I think I will try some of the soys and try to aquire a taste for them... I have tried them in the past, and didn't like them much, but if they would make me healthier, I will give them a little more of a chance.
Thanks for your input, girls... it is still hard to figure some of these things out... a year after the surgery, and still trying to translate what all of these sounds and feelings within my body mean...
I guess it is a good thing, because for once I am actually listening, or trying to listen to what my body is trying to tell me.
Thanks again,
Angela
