I am finding that I dont dump from the amount of sugar that I used to dump from, which isnt good. Before surgery I was never a big over-eater, i ate about as much as my skinny friends and family, but I was a notroius JUNK FOOD JUNKIE! I loved my sweets. I ate cookies...cakes....M&Ms...chocolate covered peanuts.....doughnuts...etc...I also loved my greasy take out food. I remember eating something with about 9 grams of sugar when I was approx 4 months out and dumped horribly. a few months ago i ate something with 15 grams and dumped horribly. NOW I CAN consume 17grams (that i know of) and NOT dump!!I dont like this. It scares me! Has anyone else noticed their tolerance going up?? I am hoping that its not just me!! OR~do you think it may have something to do with what type of sugar it is? I know there are various types of sugars and maybe sensitivities vary ?? Let me know your thoughts on this! thanks xoxo

I am with you! I too never was a huge eater, but a junkfood grazer. I found that I do not dump on sugar and it scares the @#!! out of me! I am a sweet-aholoic. I absolutely LOVE sweet and sugary foods. I need to be super aware of this and keep in my reach healither versions of sweet. I only dumped on sugar once before. I ate some tomato soup and my heart was racing, my hands shook and I felt like I was going to pass out. I looked on the side of the can and it had 21g of sugar in one serving! Sense then, I have ate candy and have no reaction what so ever! I know that this sounds crazy, but I wish I got sick from sugar!!!! Cathy

I too have (unfortunately) found out that my tolerance is now higher for sugar. I had dumped on about 2 sips of lite juice early on. Now I can eat a cookie and not dump. But I did try about 1/4 c. of homemade icecream and was close to dumping. think part of it is how dense the food is. Juice, ice cream, soup, will travel through the stomach and thus to the blood stream quicker and cause more of a reaction. Cookies, cakes, and so forth are denser and take longer to digest, thus causing less or no reaction. I wish I never would have tried that cookie! I had not tried anthing after the dumping about 1 month out on juice, until Christmas when I tried the cookie. STUPID move, I should have just gone on believing I would dump!!! I have since gone back to the theory that I will get sick if I eat sugar. I am just keeping all sugar out of the house. I can get away with that most of the time, hubby doesn't like sweets (thus why he loves me!). I only have to have them around for special occasions when the kids are over, even then, I am trying to change the kinds of things we have. My daughters are heavy and my grand daughter has inherited the same genes! So, I am trying to change the tide so to speak. Boy, that was more than you bargained for, wasn't it! Sorry for the rambling! Leeanne

Hi Lora, I've always been sensitive to sugar right from day 1 of surgery. I still can only tolerate the most 10 grams at a serving. I do have the occasional cookie or sweet but mostly stay away from them & choose something SF. Carly

Hi ~ I tolerate sugar better and like Leann, also tried a cookie and wish I had not. My doctors rule is 'sweet 16' - anything over that is a no-no. So far its worked for me. I am just starting to be OK with foods near 16g sugar. I also have an advance warning system now, something in me just tells me to stop and the appeal is gone. Also, I found that if I eat something too sugary and feel odd, I take a bite of meat of chese and it goes away. Probably not good. I dont tolerate fake sugar well - sorbitol/malitol - bleh. I can eat maybe 2 pieces of SF candy and then I get a tummy ache. I dont even think about buying them anymore. I eat fruit all the time but never any juice. Juices were too sugary for me pre-op and I cling to the idea that they will be hell for me now.

I too am experiencing the same thing. Early on, I didn't even eat a lot of things with too much sugar...i don't think i ever went past 7 grams! The same goes for fat. I was that afraid of dumping!! Now...I can eat a regular piece of cake, and fried whatever else and not get sick. I get full but not sick. In general I still stick to my thoughts that I'll get sick if I eat too much fat/sugar, so I don't overdo it too much. My doctor did tell me with my first consultation that over time we should be able to tolerate a little bit more, so.....I guess it's here. I know some people that are 2 years out and they can eat cake, french fries and whatever else and not get sick. April

I never really tried much sugar for the longest, not more than 2-3 little bites of a dessert until recently. Peanut butter makes me sick (other than a couple of tsp., which I can eat), Real ice cream I've eaten 2 times and both times it made me really nauseous. SF ice cream makes me nauseous too. You never know. Most SF stuff is okay w/ me, it just still has so many calories. Fried food makes me sick...for some reason it just clogs up my pipes...I feel like it is still in my throat 2-3 hrs. later. No more fish or chicken that is fried! I can saute in olive oil and it's okay. Karla 337/191/150

I dump on the smallest amount of sugar I had a 1/2 of a bagel with peanut butter on it the other night and could not figure out why I dumped, well I looked at the label on the bagels and they had 10gand I only had 1/2 5g's plus the suger in the peanut butter sent me over the edge. I even dump on sugarfree desserts. My surgeon's rules were nothing over 3g of sugar and nothing that has sugar in the first 10 ingredents. I am glad it makes me sick I used to be a real sugar addict forget everything else give me chocolate cake for dinner. have a great day TORI
