Help. . . We're floating away in Texas!
Oh my go****'s been raining cats and dogs for 1 1/2 days now. It started Sunday at noon and it's Monday night at 9:00 pm and it's still raining. I kept waking up last night and hearing rain and thinking, "is it ever going to stop?". Well, it hasn't. The news this morning in Houston didn't make Livingston weather look too bad. Said heavy rain for about another 1/2 hour. I think they meant 1/2 week. It rained and rained and rained. By noon, we had a river floating in the one and only way into our high school were I work and my son goes to school. 1/2 way thru the morning they announced for Seniors w/ early release from school that you could only leave if you were driving a big truck, cars couldn't get out because of the rising water. Mind you, only one entrance, w/ a big bridge over a creek in and out of our school w/ 1250 students and all the faculty. We were trapped by 1:00 or so. We knew we would have to spend the night. I had for some weird reason brought all my lunches for the week, had 6 cases of bottled water, some sodas for my son and nephew, and snacks for them plus a couple of protein bars, so I knew we would survive. I wasn't sure about the other 1200 people there. I was glad I don't teach anymore, because I didn't mind keeping my son and nephew and the counselor in my office, but I didn't want to watch a class of hs kids all night long! I have a recliner and a sofa in our office, so we could have even slept. Fortunately, the rain let up for just enough time for the water to do down from 3 foot high to about 10 inches or so high. No parents could get in to pick up their kids, but they were bussed over to our Jr. High to be picked up. Kids w/ cars got to slowly leave. I loaded up my son and nephew and headed out. I thought about driving our extra truck, which is a huge one, way off the ground, but no, I took my tiny short new Camry instead. It's really clean on the bottom now. Our normal 5 minute drive home took almost an hour. The 3 major highways in town were shut down due to 2 different creeks overflowing. We had to go wayyyyy out of the way to get home. It's okay, though, we made and didn't have to have a slumber party at the H.S. It was a rather wild and emotional day.
I hope everyone else stays dry.
