Hi Guys... What a yucky, yucky weekend! I have a 21-month old son. Last December he was hospitalized with asthma (a week before his first birthday). He has not had any trouble since then. Well...until this weekend. He has had a cold for about a month now (it seems as though he has had a runny nose since we put him in day care in August). However, last month I brought him to the doctor and was told he had a cold. Then I brought him for a follow-up and they said he was fine. Well, he was congested and coughing again so I brought him back a week later. This time they told me he had allergies. I bought that because I have been feeling miserable myself, lately, and I have bad allergies. This is a BAD time of year for ragweed sufferers. Well, he coughed all Friday night and early Saturday morning my husband woke me up saying that our son's breathing was labored and that we should give him a nebulizer treatment (we had not had to do that since the previous December). We gave it to him but it did not help at all so we brought him to the ER. I really thought they would just give him another treatment and let us go. Nope... He was admitted at 5:00 AM Saturday morning. A chest x-ray showed that he has a touch of pneumonia! He had to have an IV inserted. We know our son...he does NOT like being messed with and we asked if it was possible to sedate him before inserting the IV. The doctor said something SO frightening! He said, "That is a valid question. However, his heart rate is so elevated that sedating him might kill him." WHAT?!?! Anyhow...as I suspected, it took **six** adults to hold him down to insert the IV. They would not let me stay in the room but I did stand at the doorway. I was crying for him but I could not help but let out one chuckle...SIX ADULTS!! My boy is SO strong! So he has been in the hospital all weekend and was not permitted to leave today, either, because he is still wheezing. His spirits are good so that makes me happy...but, as you can guess, it sucks when your baby (or full-grown adult child) is in the hospital! Another blessing is that, although I live in complete suburbia, I am 4 minutes from my hospital. Yet ANOTHER blessing is that my parents happen to be visiting right now. They made me leave the hospital today to get some rest...but I decided to come into work to take care of some things because I will likely be out later in the week when my son is (hopefully) home recovering. When I ran home to shower on Saturday, I stepped on the scale to see that I was down 101 lbs. Maybe I will be excited about that later. Right now I just do not care. My son is, by no means, critical, but any prayers for his recovery would be greatly appreciated! Thanks for listening... Love and hugs, Jersey MOM

Jersey Mom, That is a tough weekend! I feel for you sweetie and hope your son comes out of it soon and bounces right back. I am glad to hear that you are close to the hospital and that your son is in good spirits. Poor guy having to have six adults hold him down, he is definitely strong! I'm so sorry you had to go through this. Well a big congratulations on hitting minus 101 lbs. When all of this is over with you can celebrate. One thing at a time! Karen S.

I am so sorry. I remember being the child in the hospital with the asthma. I have been in and out since I was 18 months out. When things quiet down, please email me and I will send you the parents side of what to look for with a child with asthma. This is from 42 years of experience. Even my Docs ask me what they should do for me, as they do with any well experienced asthmatic. For now, teach him to look at something, like texture on the walls or ceiling and to try to see pictures in it. This is a form of meditation and it helps get them thru the attacks and calms them down. It will help in the long run for everything. It is somethng that I learned and still use today for an attack. The heart rate is from the meds they gave him. Also some from him trying so hard to breath. I hope you find a new Doc. The last one should have seen the asthma problem from the first visit and not passed it off as a cold. When you are an asthmatic a cold will be a major thing and he will ALWAYS need to go on antibiotics for one, no matter what. Docs don't like doing that with kids, but you have to have them. I understand if this is too much info right now, but just a couple of things I thought might help some now Congrats on the century mark. Remember to take amomen for yourself, I know it is hard, but it is needed for your health so you can help your son.

Wow, that is a hard weekend. I will be keeping you and your son in my prayers. If it took 6 adults to keep him down, then I think the pneumonia will be kicked out of his system quickly...sounds like he's a toughie, which is good! Take care of yourself and of your little buddy, and congrats on the 100lbs loss. Kelli
