Jaci, I work in higher education at UT-Austin and although I never was a member of a sorority/faraternity while I was in college, I can tell you a few things I know. It sounds like this particular fraternity is really like a club. They may even have a national affiliation and greek letters. I am not sure about initiations and such, but I encourage you to get involved. You can meet new people and if alumni are part of the group then you can establish contacts for future use - kind of like networking. There is an old saying that says "It's not what you know, but who you know." I hope this helps - I have enjoyed your journey and wish I was in my twenties again. Keep up the good work! Thanks Rhonda! And yes, I've had the networking work in my life alot. Its good to have lots of connections, but I'd still like to achieve stuff on my own, ya know? LOL But thanks to this surgery, not everyone in my network is gonna recognize me! I have enjoyed my journey and hope it continues to be this sky high of a deal. I LOVE it!

I was in a Sorority (Kappa Delta) while in college. The band fraternity you speak of is very different then a traditional National Fraternity/Sorority. The first major difference is that the band one accepts both men and women. Then there is the fact that there are national standards/guidelines for women in National Panhellenic Sororities (the offical sorority network system). Which, you will not be subject to. From what I understand the national band fraternities are much like clubs; offering social activities to its memebers and holding them to their own private standards whi*****ludes music. If you have any questions on the National Fraternity/Sorority system, I am quite familar with it. But, as for the band fraternity, I am not much help... but, you should check it out. Sounds like it would be fun. P.S. Also, for anyone who watched Fraternity or Sorority Life on MTV, I can tell you they were local Fraternities/Sororities, which are VERY different then National Chartered ones. Basically anyone can start a club on campus and live together and call it a sorority or fraternity, but they are not nationally recognized and do not hold the same requirments that we had to live by.

Hey Mary: Have you read the book "Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities" by Alexandra Robbins? It was REALLY interesting. I was never in a sorority (too much of a hippie chick) but I found the book fascinating. I can send it to you if you are interested... Let me know! Jersey
