ipod 101

Hi Kay! I Love My Ipod Video- even though I don't have videos on it lol! They come in white or black and you can buy cases. Mine is white and I have a pink case and pink ear bud covers for it! It needs a case or protective cover because it can be scratched super easily! Mine was close to 400 bucks.... but I got an educational discount on top of that since my college has a contract with it. You might wanna check it out at apple.com.
I liked the option that I could get it engraved from the apple online store

I have the nano (it's probably 3" x 1.5"). It too comes in black and white, but you can buy colored covers for it. I bought mine at an Apple store, but I think you can get them at Best Buy etc. When I looked around the prices were pretty much the same everywhere...Jaci is right though...there is an educational discount.
You can choose the size memory you want...1, 2 or 4 gigs. I bought the 2 gig...it holds about 500 songs which is plenty for me! It comes with head phones (ear buds) and a charger to hook into the computer. I recommend buying a wall charger (one you can just plug into a normal electric socket) too.
She then can upload songs from CDs that you have by way of your home computer or she can buy songs online. On i-tunes the songs are usually $0.99 each.
I held off for a long time, but I have to tell you...I love it!
Check out the apple store on line for pricing and more nitty gritty details.
Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll try and answer them.

You might think 2 gig is plenty for an 11 year old, but it is not that much. Gig for Gig the Ipod video is the best buy. It is $50 more and you get 28 more gigs for that. If I were you I would by the 30gig IPod video. It also works as a portable hard drive, something she will start using for school. You can put pictures on it as well. But the best buy is that. An Ipod video runs about 289, to a ipod nano at 250. The small size will also allow it to be lost faster too. I have an old mini and want the video. My son just bought himself the 30gig video and his girlfriend has the nano and is looking to get the video.
I bought an Ipod Nano this summer at Sam's Club for about $150 or less. It may be 1 Gig. I don't need any more than that. I don't spend money on many CD's, so I have to download most songs at $1.00 a piece. I love mine, and got a hot pink leather case at Best Buy for about $30. You can put pictures on it too. They were cheaper at Sam's than Best Buy.

Kay,
I have the Ipod nano & I love it. I got it at the Apple store online. I use it everyday at the gym during my workouts. The time goes by so fast since I've had it. I downloaded alot of my own cd's, but then I also purchased some from the itunes store.
If I was buying one for an 11 year old, I would probably just start her off with an mp3 player. Wal-mart has them for under $50. That way if she loses it, you won't be out $200. Just my opinion though.
You'll get addicted to it, once you use it. They are one of the best inventions ever.

This is a timely post as I just got mine in the mail today!! I got the 2G Black Nano. I got it on Ebay and paid about $50 less than it would have been retail (it is new and came in a factory sealed box). I had (well I still have it) a small MP3 player that only held about 80 songs, which I quickly reached. So, I'm giving that one to my 5 year old son (we got my daughter an MP3 player for her b-day). I didn't think I would need more than 500 songs, so the 2G was perfect for me.
And, for those of you who have MP3 players/IPODs, check out the site www.allofmp3.com. You can download songs there for only about 9 cents/song. I loaded my account in January 2006 with $10 and just used it up with my 80+ songs! It's an awesome site and sooooooooo much cheaper than ITunes!
I do agree with the post that maybe an inexpensive MP3 from Walmart (my daughters was around $39 and holds 120 songs) would be a good way to go as she's still pretty young. But, peer pressure might dictate getting the IPOD. And, I think they now have a pink version of the Nano.
Good luck in your decision!
