Topic: How many calories should we intake at this time
And whats of foods should we be eating. I try to eat alot of vegatables, meat, chicken, and stay away from hambergers etc, no fried foods. My bad is chocolate and they come in little tiny bars for my size of portion. But when you add them all up, they become a problem. Thanks for your advice everyone. Huggs stacy

Topic: RE: Protein and vitamins
Stacy,
My surgeon told me that taking multi- vitamins & B-12 would be a lifetime commitment and if I wasn't willing to do that, I was not a good candidate for gastric bypass (RNY). I've been faithful taking them and on my own & with my nutritionist's advice I have added calcium, iron and a few others (zinc, biotin, Vit. K).
I recently switched to Bariatric Advantage chewable multi-vitamins (orange flavor) and Bariatric Advantage chewable iron (passion fruit flavor) and my labs are fantastic! The Bariatric Advantage are supposed to be more readily absorbed & have more bioavailability than regular ones. Seems to work better for me.
My surgeon prefers that we get our protein from food, not protein shakes or bars. However, I do supplement with shakes or bars occassionally, depending on how my day has been. I include them when I record my food on FitDay.com so I can stay within my daily calorie "allowance". That is how I've prevented weight gain so far.
Good luck & hang in there. You can do it!

greetings stacy
i, too, was told that the vitamins are a life-time commitment. i still take the same vitamins i've been taking since i had surgery. i still eat protein bars and drink the shakes too, although i believe if you get in enough protein with food, they would not be a requirement. i just LIKE them!
best to you!

Hi Stacy!! It's been awhile. How are you doing?
I just saw my surgeon a few weeks ago. I was told even prior to having the weight loss surgery that taking protein, vitamins, and calcium and iron supplements would be a lifetime requirement. He told me to always remember that our bodies are not the same as before the surgery. I guess it also depends on the type of surgery you had.
I had the lap rny and because our large intestine has been bypassed our bodies will
always have a problem absorbing enough nutrients to sustain us. That's probably why you felt tired.
I had lap rny on January 10, 2005 and still take 2 multi-vitamins, l protein shake (50 grams of protein), 2 iron, 1.500 mg. of calcium, and 2 B-12. We really need these in
order to maintain a healthy body.
Hope this helps!!
God Bless and have a great week!!!
Aloha, Pat
Topic: RE: Are you "tempted" more now??
Tracy,
I think you've hit on something I haven't really thought about. I've always done well at "dieting" and losing weight but have never been able to maintain it & keep the weight off. Maybe I am subconsiously shooting myself in the foot b/c I fear being successful this time Something think about. Thanks for the insight!!
Hang in there & stay away from the Wheat Thins (I can't buy them either!!)

Janet,
My advice is to stay as far away from sweets as possible - sugar is EVIL!! I accidentally discovered I don't dump on sugar and now I find it far too easy to give in to the temptation. I still try to monitor how much I eat but it isn't as easy since I know I can have it without getting sick. I sometimes envy those that dump on sugar b/c I know I found it easier to say "no" to sweets when I was afraid I'd get sick.
Good luck & hang in there!

Yep! Here too. I know I am an emotional eater and I have had a few issues lately. I know that its wrong but I feel like I can't stop myself! I haven't regained any weight (yet!) but I too fear regain. So I'm trying to get a grip on that part of it. I know what to do and how to do it right, but some days its hard. I enjoy Wheat Thins a little too much sometimes so I've stopped buying them. I also think that I've never been good at maintaining my weight so now that I'm in "maintenance mode" sometimes I don't know what to do and it scares me. We are all learning as we go and I feel so lucky to have all of you to learn from! Good Luck!

Topic: RE: I need your advice
Hi Stacy! I can say for myself that my head has not caught up with my body yet and I think that's very normal. I also think that once the BIG losses slow down or stop, we aren't sure what to do, how to handle it, etc and it gets scary! I know everyone says it all the time, but I think the best thing to do is push protein first, up your water intake and exercise! That is what worked for me~I was stuck at 160 and really wanted to make it to 150, but after truly evaluating what I was eating, I had to admit that I was making some bad choices. So I went back to the basic and got down to 150. Now that I'm maintaining I still have days when I eat way too many carbs or just the wrong things, but I try not to do that too often. We all have the fear of regaining the weight, but you've come so far so fast, don't give in to your fears now! Good Luck to You!
Hugs,
