Hi all, I have a problem well at least I think that it is... I have an umbilical hernia and I have been having trouble loosing my tummy... I have been told that my hernia is down low but I can't figure out why I have not been loosing my tummy... I am not to do sit ups or anything that will crunch my abs.... I am so depressed about this... I am loosing everywhere but my tummy... At times I look as though I am 5-6 months pregnant... Not a good feeling... I watch what I eat and I go to curves at least 3 times a week, and I walk at least 1 1/2 - 3 miles weather permitting.... My waist is not getting any smaller... I just don't know what else to try... I just want to sit and at times.... If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it... Thanks.... Julia 281/208/??

Hi Julia!! I also had an umbilical hernia which I had repaired in April of 2004. I had lap rny on January 10, 2005. What does your PCP say in regards to the hernia? In my case, I was referred immediately to a surgeon to have it repaired. My hernia was on the side of my navel but it had become quite large and was causing me quite a bit of discomfort because it had become very tender to the touch. I had the same problem looking pregnant before I had the hernia repaired. You might want to check with your PCP or have him refer you to a surgeon to have it checked. I know that a hernia does not go away so eventually it does have to be repaired. Hope this helps!! Aloha, Pat 261//163/goal 122

Yeah Julia, I'd ask to be referred to a surgeon to get the hernia repaired so that you get better results healing. If you can't do ab work then you are setting yourself up for other injuries b/c you need a strong CORE! You can overstress your back trying to compensate for the lack of abs, not to mention throw your hips and knees and feet all out of wack which would hinder your exercise program! A good way to compensate would be in the pool. Water arobics and swimming can help since you are using the resistence of the water instead of your body weight to exercise your abs. Twists with a broom stick across your shoulders will help!! So will strengthening your back up. Go see a trainer and see what they can suggest! HTH!
