I've been in pain for months, and out of work for 2 weeks because of back spasms from..... you're not going to belive this..... LOSING WEIGHT! Yep - the muscle spasms are b/c I've lost weight and instead of having all those rolls of fat to help hold me upright, now my core (ab) muscles are supposed to be doing the job but they are so weak that they can't. So the back muscles are trying to compensate and that isn't their job, so it is straining them to the point of severe spasms. I've seen my pcp, chiropractor and orthopedic surgern. I'm on pain meds & begin physical therapy Friday to learn exercises to strengthen my core muscles. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to "fix" it or at least to make it tolerable??? Thanks! Vickie J.

Vickie - I can definitely relate to the back spasms! Along with the back spasms, I had a spell of severe chest pain last week that landed me in the hospital. All tests were fine and their conclusion was that the muscle had pulled away from the bones on my ribcage. The back spasms that accompanied this were horrible. I always thought I had a pretty high pain tolerance, but this one was bad. The muscle relaxants and pain killers finally helped about 3 days in. I did go to a massage therapy session last night, and boy was that nice! I hope your physical therapy helps. Good luck! Cheri H.

Cheri, Thanks! I hope you're feeling better, too! My doc prescribed Massage Therapy once a week for 4 weeks. I've done 1 & have another on Friday. It does feel good and seems to help for a day or so, but not long. But hey, at this point - I'll take 1 day without pain over pain everyday! Vickie J.

Anthony, I'm sorry to hear about your back and the problems it caused. I already had a partially herniated disc before wls but part of my problem is that I can't take most heavy duty pain meds like morphine & vicodin b/c I'm allergic to them. I guess that is a sort of mixed blessing. I hope you're over all your back problems! Vickie J.

I dont know if I actually have spasms but I know that my back does have alot of pain lately. I know if I sit to long it tends to hurt from that, and if I sleep the wrong way it happens too. I am trying to build my muscles to help with the pain and cramps but it takes time. I hope everything that the dr recommends works for you. Suzanne
