Run Forrest Run!!!
OK, so I was feeling better this evening (after yacking at school in front of everyone) and my big mouth said, I feel like a run. Within 10 minutes hubby had both the dogs tied up and his running shoes on ready to go. So off we went... me swimming in his PT uniform looking like I am not wearing any shorts b/c his shirt is so big on me now. LOL!
Now mind you, I don't run. Can't. Never been able too. Bad knees, flat feet and asthma you know. Even when I was on the high school track team, I had a written contract with the coach that said I never had to run as long as I kept throwing for him. (Shot-put and discus) So simply put, I don't run. Well I am still riding on that high from hiking that 5K the other day so I figured... "If you can hike a 5K in 46 minutes you can run a mile in 15 minutes, Dang it!"
So there I am in my do-rag, oversized Army PTs with my little doxie in tow. Jim took the big girl since she LOVES to run and there is no way I can keep her pace, and I took the baby. We walked for about a minute or two just to kinda get the blood flowing and then off we went. Jim made sure that I set myself a good pace, kinda coaching me through the whole run. We took his old 1.1 mile route and when we reached the half way point he said that we were halfway there and that I could do it. So I kept pushing. About half a minute later the little dog yanked my arm out of place letting me know she had to pee, I jogged in place while she did her thing and off we went again. At this point the knees stopped hurting and I actually felt kinda good. Jim just kept couching me along reminding me to keep going, slow down but don't stop. About 2/3 of the way there I stopped for about 30 seconds b/c it felt like my upper airway was gonna close. Jim literally pushed me to get going again and I had to surrender the dog to him so I could use both arms. I just kept pumping and telling myself that I can do it. Once I reached our house I slowed to a walk and kept moving. I felt like my legs were gonna lock up on me so I just kept moving. Jim ran in the house got me water and my inhaler (first time since surgery that I have actually needed it). Then we both walked the same route again to keep my legs from locking up. When we got back home I asked him what pace we ran at and he admitted that he forgot to time it but he was positive that it was a 9:30 min mile. So I am taking his word for it (since he runs 4-7 miles a day) but I assume that it was probably closer to a 10 minute mile. BUT SHOOT I RAN A MILE and only stopped once of my own free will for just a few seconds. HOLY COW!!! I am so proud of myself... and I can't believe that I actually asked my hubby to make this a regular thing on the nights I am in school. WHAT AM I ON?!

Hey Becki... we are the same weight now! Yeah I know what you mean. I hate running, still do but at least I know I can do it and I can work on getting better. I really want to go to the academy next spring so I am trying to bust my butt. I actually had a recruiter try and sign me up today when I was at Kinkos...LOL! THAT was funny!

Make sure you take someone with you! You are less likely to give up on yourself. At least that is what worked for me!
