It's Not Enough!

I went for my 6 month checkup and my doctor really read me the riot act! I have lost 60 pounds since January 5th (Surgery was 1/20/05) and he said it was not enough. He accused me of not following his instructions and said I should lose 34 pounds in the next 90 days if I follow the food plan (with or without exercise!). I am so upset. I am really trying to follow the food plan and I am exercising the best I can. I am almost to the point of giving up. I know I am losing slow but I am 54 years old and am limited on my physical activity due to fibromyalgia. Sorry of such a negative posting especially since I don't post very often but I do read all y'alls and think y'all are doing so good. Karen

Thanks Kate. I am going to keep up the water, food (protein), and exercise. I went and bought a Gazelle machine from Walmart and I'm sure it is going to help. The only problem is I am having foot surgery next Friday and will not be walking for several weeks. (I even told the Doctor and he said I can still lose the 34 lbs without exercise!) I am just going to keep trying and look forward to when I don't go back to him!

WOW Sixty pounds is a helluva good job to me, in my opinion Maybe, honey, if you are following doctors orders exactly, you should go get a second opinion. You shouldn't have to struggle so hard with this surgery, yet, I find myself struggling, too. I don't know why people are different than others. Some people on here are well into the minus 100's and some are in the 50-60 loss range. How tall are you? Do you get enough protein? Do you take vitamins? If yes to all, then yeah, you're right on track. Hmmm, don't have anything else to add but I would DEFINITELY go see your doctor and get him to check your blood, labs, thyroid, hormone balance, EVERYTHING(I am referring to your primary care physician, too, not your surgeon). Hang in there sweetie... I'm behind you all the way Let me know how this goes ok? ::::::::hugs:::::::::: Beth

I'm 5'5". Yes I take all the vitamins, drink the water, and 99% of my diet is protein as well as one protein shake a day. I had lab work done about a month ago and everything was fine. I will just be glad when I do lose the 34 lbs. because then I will be at my Doctor's goal for me and then I won't have to keep going back every 3 months. Thanks for your support. Karen

Karen, don't let it discourage you! Everyone moves at their own pace and I think the important thing is that you are moving. That 60 lbs is 60 lbs that you are no longer carrying on your person. 60 lbs off your joints and heart and 60 lbs toward your goal! Just keep a great attitude, personally I decided at my first thirty lbs that no matter what happened, even if it stopped there, that everything that I had gone through would still be worth it. We are here to support you! Just hang in here with us! Hugs, Jenny 373 / 261 / 173 112 lbs lost!

Karen: I always say I am a slow loser and I know I don't do everything 100% correct - I do well on the food, I think, low end of protein with a minimum of 50-60 grams daily, sometimes more. Stick to about 1000 calories daily, but exercise is practically nil and I don't drink enough liquids. I have lost 57 lbs so far and feel so much better. I went back on the web site where it tells you how much you should lose each month based on your starting height and weight and how much you want to lose. I put in 70% of my excess which they say is average. I found I am only 5 lbs less than their charted opinion. That made me feel much better. I think we are doing fine (I am 58). I know I would do better with exercise, but like I said, I still feel so much better and if I never lost another pound, would not regret it. Of course, tho, I do want to lose more and sure hope I will. We both need to keep up doing what we are doing and maybe do just a wee bit more, right? Lynne 262/205/170?

Yes, we need to keep it up. After seeing my doctor, I was really resenting the limitation of food but I'm starting to get over it. I eat 50-80 grams protein a day (chicken, fish, hamburger, cheese, and a little dry roasted peanuts). Drink at least 40 oz of water and another 50 oz of crystal lite a day. Walk a mile every morning and now work on the Gazelle once or twice a day. If I lose 1-2 pounds a week at least I'm still losing. I just hate the thought of seeing the doctor in Nov.

Oh Karen--- Don't let him bother you like that. Next time take an inpartial party with you so that they can be witness to his mistreatment. I also suggest that you seek a second opinion even if it is with your regular doctor. Have you kept a food log, perhaps a nutritionist can find something that your doctor might be missing. My doc insists on 3 meals and no snacking. However, when I saw the nutritionist he changed the doc's order to 4 small meals or 3 with a protein shake. After he did that my weight loss picked up again. Since you have fibromyalgia and your activity is limited have you sought out alternative exercise regiments? Not sure what is avaiable in your area but TaiChi is VERY good! So is water arobics! Maybe one of those would be better for you. I know how painful exercise can be with inflmmation and degenerative diseases honey and if your doc is unwilling to help you through it then you need another opinion. For example, if exercise is really a problem then he should refer you to a physical or occupational therapist so that your insurence can pay for alternative therapies. HTH! Keep the faith and we will support you through this sweetie. You are not the only slow looser here, don't give up!
