Popcorn? Carbs?
I was wondering how many of you do eat popcorn and if it is "permitted" on your surgeon's program? If you do eat popcorn, how much at a time do you eat? I read on the main board that popcorn is actually not as "bad" as most people realize and has a lot less carbs than I thought it would, especially the kind that does not have a lot of butter added. I also had been afraid to even try popcorn for fear that the kernels would cause a problem in my pouch or with digestion. I did try some popcorn last night and it was SOOOOO good. It just brought back a lot of the old feelings I got before surgery when eating snacks or sweets, like feeling like I couldn't eat enough (I probably could have eaten the whole bag of popcorn if I didn't limit myself), and not really feeling full after eating 1 cup of popcorn.
I alway limit the carbs I eat and almost always eat carbs only through veggies, fruits and sometimes whole wheat crackers. My surgeon's program does not limit carbs or have us count carbs, but suggests eating only healthy carbs. Both the surgeon's dietitian and my primary physician have recommended to me to increase the carbs, because I was limiting carbs so much that all I was eating was meat/protein and only a few bites of fruit or veggies a day. I was still hungry all the time and had low blood sugar levels, especially at night. Most importantly, though, was that I had NO energy at all. This all improved when I started adding more good carbs. I also have much more energy now, so I can exercise more and am losing more weight as a result.
Am still worried about eating popcorn, though, and I know it is not really in the category of "good" carbs. Any opinions?
My surgeon says "Why eat it, popcorn has little nutritional value" and humans lack the ability to truely digest corn anyways. However he does not say it is a no-no. My nutritionist says NO, don't waste the eating or drinking time on it.
Although I eat it once in awhile now that it does not make me "sicky in the tummy"! Typically I share a "snack sized" microwave popcorn with my son!

In my guidelines, popcorn is OK after 3 months - and I LOVE it!! Popcorn and soy chips are the only crunchy, snacky foods that I feel OK eating. Plus, it adds a lot of fiber to the digestive tract (which is sometimes difficult to get when you're eating very low carbs). Make the best choice possible for fixing method (air popped is better than microwave or oil popped) and ENJOY!! Be sure to read those labels if you are going to buy microwave bags since there are differences between brands. Just keep popcorn where it belongs - an occasional food (not a regular) while you still want to lose rapidly.
