amount of food?

I posted this on my state board, but thought it would be nice to get suggestions from ya'll as well. I know some of you have had specific instructions from your nutritionist/dietician/surgeon, but I have not, so please don't flame me for going against the program. They are not as strict where I got surgery and they certainly have not given me exact guidance, saying it is very individualized. Anyway, any suggestions would help. Sorry it is so long... Posted on Maryland board this a.m.: I am almost 3 months postop and am concerned about the amount of food that I can eat. I have had this problem from the beginning and can't get a definite answer as to how much I should eat, only "eat until you are comfortably satisfied or full". I do not get to the "full" point and have been using the guidelines I hear others at my stage talk about. I can eat 4 oz of meat (weighed using a scale) and a few bites of veggies and/or a few bites of fruit. I feel like I should stop so I do, but I am not full. Today, I thought I would just eat until I was full. I had an entire Lean Cuisine meal with chicken and broccoli. I measured it and it was 3/4 of a cup total. I also ate 1/2 banana. I am still hungry! I space my eating out so it takes me almost exactly 20 minutes to eat. Everyone says the further along we get the more we can hold/eat. I am afraid I will go back to being able to eat what I did preop. I have only tried to eat until I am full a few times. Other times, I just stop at the point I think I should stop, but am hungry a short time later (but do not eat until the next scheduled time). I have only gotten sick when I ate chicken salad with mayo (I think it was the mayo), and really dry roast that had BBQ sauce (maybe the BBQ sauce). I also have not experienced any dumping episodes, but have not tried sugar or juice and have only a little bit of fruit. Any guidance would be appreciated. Sue

Hi Sue! I had my lap rny on January 10, 2005. My surgeon is Dr. Paul Cirangle from San Francisco. He is with the LAPSF clinic. In some ways we are experiencing the same things and in others just the opposite. For one thing, my surgeon is very strict about what his patients can and cannot eat. We can't have rice, pasta, even vegetables and fruits that contain a lot of natural sugar, and oh I forgot also any breads. He was very explicit about the amount of food that we should be consuming, and you are exactly right in the amount that you are having as far as 4 oz. of fish, chicken any meat high in protein along with your veggies. As far as "dumping" I too have never experienced that. I am able to eat so far everything that I have put into my mounth! It's scary sometimes, because I know people have even mentioned that on bad days they can't even get their liquids in. That's not the case with me, everything that goes in stays in! The only time I felt ill at all was one day when I did not chew enough and swallowed too quickly. One thing that I find very different sometimes as compared with the other WLS members is that my surgeon does not allow any snacks in between. We are told 3 meals a day, "no more, no less". But truthfully, I find that more than ample food for a day. Wow, congratulations on your 56 pound loss!!!! Right now I am going through I guess what they call a "plateau". I am doing everything I'm supposed to, but am not seeing the weight loss I would like to. I guess we just need to be patient. You are doing great, since you are actually over a week after I had my surgery. You go girl!!! Have you experienced a plateau at anytime? I would say you are doing fine, it's unfortunate that your doctor doesn't give you more specific instructions but you are doing just great on your own!!!! What type of exercising are you doing? I use the treadmill. Hope this helps and keep up the great work! Aloha, Pat

Thanks Pat. Yes your information has helped. I also am supposed to eat 3 meals a day 5 hours a part, and can have 1 snack, if needed, but no more. I have experienced stalls already with weight loss, usually about 2 weeks and then I will start losing again. It is so hard to get through that period of time. I just keep thinking, this is it, I won't lose any more, etc. Exercise: I go to the navy gym 5 to 7 days a week. I am up to 1 hour each time for the last 2 weeks. I warm up on the bike for 5 minutes, elliptical for 30 minutes, treadmill for 20 to 30 minutes and then cool down on the bike for 5 minutes. This is working out okay right now. BTW, I like that you said I lost 56 pounds, but it really is only 51 so far, unless I count my morning weight when I am naked and haven't eaten breakfast, then is more like 54 pounds--LOL. Thanks again. Sue

I am lucky if I can get down 4 oz of anything now. I have often wondered if I should be eating more now, but thats all I can get in. Jenn

RNY on 01/25/05 with
Sue, I had my surgery on Jan. 25. I am 11 weeks out today. At my 6 week check up I was told that I should be eating 1/2 cup of food and it should take an hour to eat it. I was also told to wait 30 min. to an hour after eating before I have anything to drink. This should be the case until I am 6 months out and then it will go to 1 cup of food. Not that this is the "right" way but it is the plan I have from my doctors office. Just my 2 cents worth!! Hope that it helps!! Becky P.

1/2 cup sounds like what I have heard others say also. I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks Becky!

Just wanted to add that 1/2 cup of food is supposed to take me an hour to eat. However, that is SOLID food. And I really can't eat that much at one time. I am exactly 3 months out today and can eat 1/2 cup of liquid food (jello, etc.) or 1/2 cup of soft food (cottage cheese, etc.) but can only do about 2 (1/4 c.) of solid food at one time. I still get so full from drinking my water!! Not complaining, just can't do a lot at once.....

I sure know how you feel I can eat anything and it also seems like I can eat way to much. I try and keep it at about a cup at a time. I also follow my cals and protien on FitDay.com it really helps to see what I am doing. Good luck and keep going...........................Peggy
