Exercise...

I know this is an integral part of weightloss and maintenance, but I have been very resistant to the idea. I keep thinking about joining Curves (a bit of a drive) or the 24-hour fitness club just up the street from me... but I'm afraid of past patterns that haunt me - in that I'd go a couple of times and then beat myself up for the rest of the year and finally drop the memebership. I did get a new treadmill in December and have used it exactly twice - even though it is all set up with a TV and CD player... A dear friend of mine came up with a GREAT idea, however. We usually shoot the breeze daily for a minimum of 30 minutes on the phone. She said we should multitask and work out while we are on the phone together - she's such a smarty farty! So, today, is the first day and at 10:00 we have a workout date with the treadmill/R bike and the phone I've made a deal with myself... I will do this for two weeks and then if I stick with it, then I'll go and get my gym membership and a personal trainer. Beth already has her membership and then we'll meet at the gym 3-4 days/week and still have our phone exercise dates on the off days. Anyone else having a hard time with exercise?!? Hiya Wendy!! I love the idea of "talking while you're walking". That would motivate me!! I am thinking maybe I can use my cell phone and call my friends while I walk the neighborhood. My daughter has preschool at the YMCA 5 days a week, so I use that time to work out. I have to tell you though............yesterday I decided to walk the neighborhood while my kids rode their bikes. While I was watching a neighbor park his car my ankle twisted out from under me and I landed on my BUTT!!! SOOOO embarrassing!! Got a skinned knee, very swollen ankle, and I ripped my new Old Navy capris!!! Bad day in Sharon's world!! LOL Anyways, like the old Nike slogan says..............JUST DO IT!! No choices there. Happy workouts. Sincerely, Sharon

Okay now this is a prime example of what I've been talking about, you haven't been doing excersize and you had surgery one day after me and have lost almost 50lbs, I have lost only 27. Something is wrong I just can't take this anymore this surgery isn't working for me sorry don't mean to be a bummer but I'm just really about to lose it...... Marti

When I read your profile, Marti -- your starting weight was signficantly less than mine -- by about 50 pounds -- that could very well account for the slower loss. The friend I worked out with today had her surgery on the 27th of September 2004. She was a Kaiser HMO patient and had to lose 21 pounds prior to surgery, so she started at about 228. She has only lost 40 pounds since her surgery, but she is pretty happy to be in a size 12/14. Her thyroid is a bit whacky, though, with a TSH of 12 which is 4xs normal. She goes in next week for her six month checkup - hopefully they will adjust her thyroid medication to help the TSH come down and that will help her lose a bit faster. I'm sure you've dissected everything you can in your regimen, but if not, feel free to get a hold of me. Bestest wishes!!!! wendyb

Wendy, I to have had a very hard time with exercise. I have not exercised once since my surgery. I am still having a hard time with energy. I do all of my protien, water, vitamins, etc. but still lack in the energy dept. I also have another problem. I still smoke! I have tried to quit several times, but it's really hard when your whole family and all of your employees smoke! I've tried Wellbutrin, the patch and Nictatrol to no avail. I've heard that if you exercise, it helps with energy but i need to quit smoking before i can exercise. Any suggestion? Sheila -55 lbs.

Hi Wendy - good idea about talking while you are walking. I have a treadmill in my basement but don't use it. My husband and I joined the local Y and went twice a week for two weeks and then stopped. I hate exercise!!!! I have lost 35 lbs since surgery (01/14/05) and know that no exercise is a big reason I am not losing more. I tell myself I just "have" to do it, but.....................
