Does everyone use protein supplements?

I was told by my doctor to get my protein from food. I have had a very very hard time doing this. If I make it daily it is barely. Is everyone else using supplements? I might have to go against his idea and use them. Jenn

Jenn: I get less than half of my protein via food. I supplement for the rest. I actually have a protein shake for breakfast every morning. My stomach is usually too grouchy to eat any food. Why did your doctor recommend against the supplements? Sassy

He just wanted me to focus on getting my protein from food based products, I think to make me get other natural nutrients. I also think he does not want us to get used to snacking on extra protein supplements so we do not get used to taking in extra calories. I was told to eat 3-4 meals a day and no snacks. Jenn

What if you told him you weren't getting in your protein? If it was a matter of facing a protein deficiency, what would he say?

Well when I did question it he insisted I could do it. He said If I ate 4 meals with 2 oz of protein each with about 8 grams per ounce I should get 64 grams a gay. I just seem to not be able to get that much protein down at once. I have started having milk during the day, that helps but I just feel like it is not enough. Jenn

I never EVER would advise anyone to go against their surgeon/doctor's advice & suggestions. My doctor & his assisting surgeon both told me that it is VITAL to get in 65+ protein a day. They KNEW we couldn't do it on foods alone, especially in the liquids & pureed stages...I mean really... I have used supplements since day 1, and that's the ONLY way really, that I can fully obtain the protein goals, and still most days I don't get over 40g because I don't eat much. I can only eat at least 2 bites per meal, the MOST I've ever eaten since surgery is an entire chicken enchilada drenched in cheese sauce, which makes it in the category of soft foods (see my post on the main boards from Tuesday)... I was shocked! I drink Isopure protein drinks now. It has 40g of protien and they taste like koolaid to me. I can drink them straight, or mix them with Hawaiian punch light, or sugar free koolaid (any flavor)... I bought it at GNC Anyway, THERE IS NO WAY IN THE WORLD we can get in 65+g of protein with only/strictly food, because if yall are like me, we can only eat a couple of bites and then too full Don't go against his wishes BUT if you aren't getting in enough protein, it's crucial and could be harmful. I will email you a copy of my newsletter I received from Unjury protein company...I had EVERY SINGLE symptom. Take care Beth

Thanks so much. I am going to call the doctor and ask if I can adjust it for now so I can get my protein in. I am sure they will let me. Thanks Jenn

I wouldn't get nearly enough without atkins shakes...have at least one every day, sometimes two. Wish I could add steak back to my diet...miss it...can't handle it yet though. Melissa 399/307/180
