Why no carbination?
I have a question regarding carbinated drinks ...are they bad because they stretch your new pouch or are they bad because they can cause discomfort?? any input?
I am 2 months out today and I am getting to the point that I have more energy I started walking this past week ....I am only down about 35 # should I be concerned Thanks for any input Sherri
I do not think they are necessarily bad for the pouch, but just try it and you will find out. Some people have no problems with it and others do. I seem to have problems with it. I tired on several occasions after I was out 6wks to have a few sips of Diet Coke, but it does not feel good going down, unless it is watered down. But then lately nothing does, so.. go figure. The 1st 4 wks after surgery were great, no problems, but then slowing I could not drink enough fluids or water everything felt bad going in... I then began to sufer from nausea for about 3.75 wks. I just in the last 6 days began to feel better and have been able to drink water without any trouble. I am sticking it out for another few wks until I have my 3 mths checkup. If I am still having trouble with anything solid (like chicken) I am going to request a scoping, maybe my stoma is just too narrow.
Soooo I think you can give the carbinated drink a try, you pouch will let you know. I know that the nutritionist prefer you not drink them, but I cannot imagine that if you can tolerate it, 1/2 of a drink would be too bad.
As far as the weight loss... well everyone is different. I found this out, as so many that are larger seem to loose fast fo the 1st 6 wks, but not me and yet I started with a BMI of 55 so I expected to loose 40 lbs in the 1st mth or 5 wks, but that did not happen. I have lost 45 in a little over 8 wks, which is not bad at all, but I had hopped for a little more. Given that, your loss seems just fine as well.
My engery is also finally coming back, and I will begin to go to the gym next week. Hopefully that will help speed things along some too...
Hang in there Sherri, I think you are doing GREAT !!

Thanks so much for your vote of confidence and your fast reply. I really like carb. water and have had it quite a few times the ony issue is the fact that I have more burping than usual so I drink it at home vs. out in public my bmi was 40 so I do not have as much to loose as some but it still is less than I expected... I hope things get rolling as I go walking more Thanks again for your support...I think your doing great too,,,, hope you get some answers at your 3 month appointment Take care Sherri
Hi Sherri,
I was told to STAY AWAY from carbination period........... They said it will streach out your pouch, even if you let it set to flatten it. It will still streach it out. And this is something you DON'T WANT. They said stay away for ever.... And I was a big diet dew/coke/pepper drinker... Had to have one about 6 times a day.
I was told by my doc that is put unnessisary air into your digestive system and that would cause discomfort amoung other things. If you had RNY you must remember that we no longer have the pyloric sphincter (the muscle at the bottom of your stomach that opens and closes to let food and liquids pass into your intestines). So instead of your pouch having the ability to open and close at the bottom to allow food and liquids into the intestine gradually it passes quite easily now with little restriction from any scarrification from the reattatchment. Therefore if you are drinking carbonation it goes into your intestines instead of with a normal stomach it sit in the stomach acid and decarbonates and there is plenty of "air space" for it to store up ready for a belch or two. We no longer have that "storage" function nor the space in our new pouches. Lap band folks have it easier, I have heard that they eventually can go to pop.
Now I have read online that it can stretch your pouch but do not know how medically true that is. Besides why intake liquid calories? And if you are doing calorie free pop, why intake all that sugar alcohol? KWIM?
HTH!
Brightest Blessings for a Wonderful Day~

HI All
boy it is great to get all this input so fast...you all have the same answers I was told...it will stretch your pouch...it will give you gas....you shouldnt waste the calories (although I drink seltzer water..so the sugar alchohol is not an issue) tonight I have a meeting and hopefully the surgen is there I will ask again...clarification! in the mean time I like regular water and lemon water so i guess its back to the flat stuff! better fla****er then big pouch! Sherri
I was told...no carbonation, period ....I read an interesting article somewhere. It said to take a 2 liter bottle of coke, pepsi, whatever...put a balloon on the top (after removing the cap) and walk around with it for a little while and watch what happens to the balloon. This is the same thing that happens to your pouch. This was enough to convince me...not to mention that coke can be used to eat the battery acid off your battery cables. Do we really want to put anything in our baby pouches that can eat acid??? I was a Dew addict prior to surgery & can honestly say that now, I don't miss giving it up. I feel better without all the caffeine and artificial stuff that is in them. I have also heard they will slow weight loss. Hope this helps.
