I had surgery on 2/28, came home on 3/2, slept most of the day after I got home...and then 3/3 I got up and started moving about the house...enough to get those required walks in, but nothing major. I am taking my vitamins, and eating slowly..... Today I have had: Breakfast: 4 oz carb countdown milk w/ 1 scoop elite protein powder, this gave me 29 grams of protein and 162 calories Lunch: 4 oz carb countdown milk w/ 1 scoop elite protein powder, same amount calories and protein. Dinner: 4oz cream of mushroom soup, strained, AND sugar free jello cup, which added an additional 70 calories. I am drinking my water, and have licked on a sugar free popcicle in between today....so far I only have in about 30 oz water. I have had no nausea or vomiting, only a little gassy. I am starting to have head hunger, and my husband fixed cornbeef and cabbage for him and the kids tonight...... any way, to get to the point...am I taking in way too much for 4 days post op? I don't know what I weigh....I got rid of my scale a long time ago...and they did not weigh me before I left the hospital. I am so scared that I am going to be the one that this does not work for.....any advice?

Yup, Don't beat yourself up. It takes one day at a time and out of the thousands here I dont see anyone yet it did not work for.

Hi Lori, In the beginning I had the same worries as you. I called my nutritionist and she went over the suggested guidelines as to what I should be eating. In the beginning tried to follow this as closely as possible but had difficulty either keeping things down while other times I felt like I was overeating. She also suggested that I keep a food diary. The food diary helped. I became more disciplined over time and suprisingly, I am able to measure things out without keeping a food diary. Also, try not to worry so much about this not working for you. You just went through major surgery so focus more on healing for the time being. I was scared too that I wouldn't lose the weight but it really is coming off once I began to take in the right amounts of fluid and nutrients. Make sure that you get in the protein and sipping water throughout the day will help with the head hunger. Also, make certain that you are waiting at least 30-40 mins after you eat before you drink. Drinking water or fluids while you eat can cause pain from fullness but it can also help to wash the small amounts of food you take in to leave your pouch quicker, which means of course you will get hungry sooner. Don't worry...we'll loose the weight.

Thank you both for your replies.....I think that I may have spoken too soon about no nausea or vomiting though...because yesterday was a really bad day....needless to say, hardly anything stayed in....and I hurt, so I took the Lortab Elixer I was prescribed, which zonked me completely. This is like the first time I had to take it since the day I came home....and I was frustrated! Anyway....lots of tears shed yesterday, oh yeah...it was a grand ole pity party......my poor husband decided to stay outside most of the day. I did get to watch The Notebook, which was a fantastic movie....but then I cried more....lol! Anyway, I have yet to really get to eat anything, I only drink right now, so I did not think that it would matter about the 30-40minutes of drinking after the meal....maybe that is what I will try..... My first post-op appointment is the 10th....hopefully I will get to start some soft proteins then.....and maybe I won't be so miserable once I can chew something. Hope everyone else is doing well today. Have a glorious Sunday.

Hi Lori! I had my lap rny on January 10th. Sounds like you're doing everything great!! I know what you mean about the scale, I e-mailed my surgeon several times because the numbers haven't changed recently, and he told me to remember that muscle weighs more than fat so that I may be in transition and not to count on the numbers. I should get rid of my scale too! Don't worry about it not working. I think we all go through this feeling. It is a big life change that we have decided to embark, but I know everything will work out for you! I was going to mention that the only thing is that you might want to up your liquid intake. My surgeon wants me to have at least 64 oz. or more of liquid per day. That would include your protein drink. God Bless and Take Care! Pat
