What are you eating?
Hi!
I am almost 7 weeks post op and I was wondering what everyone at this point is eating. I am still on soft foods of course, a carb, every other day, seafood, just started chicken this week and next week I am allowed to have salad. My doctor's office really hasn't given me a plan after that. Are you eating crackers yet? chili? bread (wheat)? Any advice or comments would be appreciated.
I had my surgery on 1/19/05. I can eat: Soup, deli sliced beef, crackers, toast, cottage cheese, cheese, salmon, tilapia, baby bay shrimp salad, finely pureed chicken salad, peaches (mashed up), chili (in blender), roasted chicken (dark, no skin), spagetti sauce, Echrich sausage cut tiny and chewed very well(no skin), Beans, Lentils, peas, carrots (mushy)
sugar free raspberry Crystal Lite, tomato juice, veggie juice, sugar free popsicles and ice cream, bananas, sugar free chocolate, mint tea, and finally WATER!!!! I can even take a few sips of Diet Dr. Pepper! (on a totally empty tummy and only if ICE cold!)
I cannot eat yet: Hamburger meat, bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, steak,
raw veggies, pickles, olives, or anything with sugar. I have experienced the pain of having food get stuck and throwing up enough to stick to what I know now ****il my doctor says I can have more). I work out 5 days a week for 1 hour and drink a lot of water (just now; couldn't before.) I have a protein shake every evening, and I take a chewable iron, calcium, and multi-vitamin daily. I have more energy than I have had in 20 years and I have dropped from a 3X pushing a 4X, down to a 2X soon to be 1X. I have dropped 35 lbs. and no longer need diabetic meds. or have trouble sleeping. I wake up refreshed every day. Even my monthly visit from Aunt Flo is lighter and has less cramps. Life is Good!!!

Hi Lou Ann,
It so nice to hear how well you are doing and how great you feel. I am still looking for additional energy. Could you tell me what your daily menu looks like? Here's my daily menu: I usually have a protein drink for breakfast or unsweetened Cheerios with skim milk and add unflavored protein powder to it. For lunch I have 1/2 of a Wendy's Chili. I usually have a protein bar for snack or sf Jello or slice of cheese. For dinner, If I make a roast in the crock pot then I puree the meat along with some of the vegetables. I usually snack on a few small bites of pretzels and sf popsicles. Take Care,
Syndi
O.K., here is my daily menu:
Breakfast- veggie juice (with 1 scoop protein) and a melba toast cracker
Snack- my chewable vitamins and a sugar free drink
Lunch- 3 oz.deli roast beef with melted swiss cheese on melba toast thin, or 2 oz. bay shrimp salad (baby shrimp, 1/2 tbl. fat free mayo, finely pureed chives and onions, seasoning to taste, on an avocado half)
Snack- finish lunch leftovers or soup (1/4 cup) tomato basil.
Dinner- Whatever the hubby fixes, or wherever we go to eat. Usually, it goes like this: Chinese-Hot and Sour or egg drop soup, Mexican-Beans and cheese with hot sauce, Seafood- Grilled Salmon or grilled shrimp, other- soup if on the menu or grilled chicken breast and take home leftovers.
Evening snack- Protein drink with banana and occassionally, a sugar free yogurt or jello.
Throughout the day I drink WATER, WATER,WATER!!!!!!!
No meat yet except for Wendy's chili, everything else comes back up. I'm still on soft foods and liquids mostly. I like the Carb Control Smoothies for breakfast, 8 ounces of Isopure drink at breaks and for lunch usually string cheese, cottege cheese or refried beans and cheese. Supper will be either scrambled Egg Beaters, hard boiled egg or chili. I fill in the evening with either Dole SF popcicles or Quaker Soy Crisps (for the crunch). I just this weekend found that the Atkins Crunchers have 13 grams of protien in 1 serving but have only found it in barbaque. I keep trying the meats but no go yet. Hopefully soon.

Hi Lisa! I had my lap rny on January 10th which makes me 8 weeks post op today!
My surgeon is pretty strict so his patients are given a food plan to follow pretty much for as long as you want to stay healthy after surgery.
Normally, I skip breakfast which seems to be ok. I have a protein drink that contains 70 gms. of protein. I normally drink this at about 10:30 am.
He also advices us to drink at least 64 oz. of water, or crystal light, or any other non-carbonated sugar free drink.
For lunch I'll have 3 oz. of chicken with a handful of baby spinach and a little balsamic vinegar over it.
He tells his patients to eat 3 meals per day and no snacks. So for dinner,
I might have 3 oz. of fish with some cooked vegetables. Actually, if you are drinking enough water you really won't be able to eat any snacks.
In my case, I can't even fit in a third meal.
The main thing is also exercise, I use my treadmill at home at least 5-6 times a week for about an hour or at least 40-50 minutes. Exercise is very important. He told me to start out slowly the second week after surgery.
I guess all surgeons are different. My doctor is in San Francisco but he has his cell phone available to his Hawaii patients 24-7 or we can e-mail him and he will normally get back to me the same day.
As far as what we can't eat, he advices us not to eat bread, pasta, beans, crackers, anything that contains starch. Even certain fruits like apples and oranges which contain a lot of natural sugar. He told me that he recommends fresh blueberries, watermelon. Even yellow vegetables like squash, pumpkin, carrots contain a lot of natural sugars.
So basically I'll have a protein and a vegetable. I don't eat out because it would be too hard to keep track of what I'm taking in. I even make my own salad dressing out of extra virgin olive oil, dijon mustard and balsamic vinegar. It's really yummy! There's even a low carb catsup that I found at my local grocery store.
Hope this helps you!
Take care and write me if you have time!
Aloha, Pat
