2 questions: one on sugar/the other on flu
I am 6 weeks out and will be on softs for another 2. I have a question about sugar. I have noticed alot of sugar free stuff has "sugar alcohol". Does anyone know the difference and whether the sugar alcohol is bad for us too? Also, both my kids have the flu and I am DREADING getting it. I have enough trouble getting protein and fluids down without that. Anyone out there had the flu and can give me some direction??
I had the flu when I was 1week out of surgery. Make sure any medication you get is sugar free. Call your dr because they don't want us to get Pneumonia, they gave me an antibiotic. Have plenty of SF popsicles, tylenol, and creamed soups. Be careful and use a small pillow when you cough. Try to up your vitamins. Good luck,

Yeah, most liquid medicine does. I had the same problem with liquid zyrtec. The company said (yes I called Phyzer) the sugar amount was not "significant" but hubby insisited on numbers and after we totaled up all the numbers they gave us it came out to 20g of sugar in 1 Tablespoon! OUCH!!!

Your question about sugar was posted on the main message board yesterday as well. Dame Tooter replied to it. Basically she said regular sugar is dumped into your blood stream and processed by your body which causes dumping. Sugar alcohols are not processed and leave your body in the same form they enter. She did say that some people do dump on sugar alcohols. You may want to search for the post from yesterday and get her exact answer.
Sorry I can't help you with the flu part.

I can't explain the sugar alcohols, but did want to let you know that I had a problem with mild diarrhea for the first 10 days when I drank Crystal Lite or had anything with sugar alcohols. This has since resolved and I have no trouble presently with the drinks or popsicles.
I was sick a week before surgery and was given a 5-day antibiotic just to be sure I wouldn't have an infection at surgery time. Fortunately, have not had the flu (I got a flu shot, so hopefully will avoid it this time). Just wash your hands frequently and be sure and take your vitamins to keep yourself as strong as possible to fight anything off that your children might give you. Good luck!

I just went to a seminar on WLS diets and the nutritionist there said that we should not get more than 10g of sugar (surgar alcohol included) per meal. Such alcohol names are Sorbitol, manitol, lacitol, malitol. Too much sugar alcohol is not necissarily bad but it can give you gas or worse yet, diareahha!
Make sure when you are label reading to make note of SERVING SIZE in reguards to the numbers you are reading. It does not matter if something has 10g of protein in it if a serving is 2 cups and all you can eat is 1/4 cup! Conversly, if you see some "sugar free" something or other and it has 20g of sugar alcohol, look to the serving size... for example some of the candies I have for a "sweet craving" are 20g or higher in sugar alcohol but a serving is 10 pieces. Well heck, these days 1 piece is enough for me... so I am only getting in 2g of sugar alcohol!
HTH!
