I have been having trouble keeping food down, and sometimes liquids too recently. I am 4 weeks post op. Today the nurse at my surgeon's office said to me that it's normal to feel "sharp pains in the chest" after drinking water. I further questioned her because this just started less than a week ago, and she was chastising me acting as if I was silly to think it wouldn't hurt. "after all" she said, "you have sutures that are healing" I find her to be mean and not understanding at all. Actually, I never feel like she's even listening to me when I speak to her, whether it's on the phone or in the office. Any thoughts or input please? --J

Jezzie, Im sorry to hear you are having such a hard time. This is just my 2 cents, but it sounds to me like you have a stricture, I was having the same problems as you are and when I went to my Dr he told me that at 1 month post-op I should not be having any trouble eating normal foods and taking my meds but everytime I tried they would get stuck and up they would come. My Dr. sent me to have an EDG done and that fixed my problem. I am so much happier now and feel wonderful. You might want to ask your DOCTOR about this problem and bypass the nasty nurse. God Bless Kelly

I'm sorry your having troubles. PLEASE talk to your surgeon. Do not accept the nurses remarks. INSIST on speaking to your surgeon then insist he run some tests to see whats what in there. This is YOUR HEALTH...INSIST on it! (BTW...H2O is just YUCKY to me and I used to LOVE water...it sits in my pouchie and feels like cement!! LOL)

Thanks Ladies, Is an EDG when they "stretch" your opening? I insisted to the mean nurse that I am not comfortable with her answers and she finally gave me the number to a GI doctor and told me to make an appointment if I feel I need to. Needless to say, I did. Unfortunately the soonest they can see me is Friday. For the past 2 days I have been keeping about 15 to 20 ozs of liquid per day in my body....so I guess that will have to do until Fri. --J

Yes Jezzie, Yes, an EDG is when they go down your throat with a small scope and take a look at the opening to your new stomach; if you have a stricture they will stretch it then. I am SHOCKED to hear how you have been treated. When I told my Dr that I was having trouble with food and meds getting stuck my Dr called and had me into see a GI Dr office that afternoon having an EDG done. I can only imagine how frustrated you are. Hang in there and maybe call the GI doctors office and let them know that if they have any cancellations to call you. Good luck Kelly

Ok this may be a silly question, but does it hurt when the scope goes down your throat? Do they numb it or something? I have a great fear of anything going down my throat.. so if I did have a stricture I probably would just suffer and hope it would go away beside itself.. Janine

There is no pain. They give you meds through an iv in your hand. 5 secs. after they give you that, they spray your throat with some nasty rotten banana tasting stuff that numbs your throat. The next thing you know, they are telling you it is over. I have had two, and don't even remember them. Gooood Drugs. I had to wait an hour before and after the procedure. It is the waiting that is a pain. Trust me when I say " There is no pain!" Nada. zero. zip. I was told what they did, but remember nothing. I wasn't even scared the second time. The first time I was out of my mind with fear. I imagined choking, gagging, etc. Nope. None of that. I don't even remember the tube being inserted. I was THAT out! The anesthetist is good at what they do. They do 10 of these a day, every day. As a musician, I know that practice makes perfect! : ) You will need a ride home. Don't try to drive yourself. Have a nice nap. There is no sore throat afterward, either. You should feel better. Lou Ann

Hi Jezzie, I would go to emergency room if this was me. You can get extremely dehydrated and then your blood pressure will drop and you can get dizzy or even pass out. Starving to death is not an issue but dying of dehydration can be. I'm sorry that you feel crappy but you need to do whats good for you. I would also call and DEMAND to speak or see my surgeon thats what he gets paid the 20,ooo$ for. B -41 as of last wednesday
