Anyone been hungry a couple days post-op?
Hi Robin,
I had my surgery the same day you did and I went home on all clear liquids. I'm soooooooooooooooooo hungry I had to host my sons bday party and got to watch everyone eat all that food while I sipped on ice and water. I hate the broth and find myself eating alot of pop Ices. I drink juices and yesterday while I was out I stopped at a resturant and got some real soup. I drank the broth and it was sooooooo good I was full off the four ounces I drank and I even burped! I think I'm going to start eating things like that cause I can't do clear liquids anylonger.
Arlette
Arlette,
I finally started drinking some protein shakes and man, what a difference! Now I think I can make it until my follow-up appointment! I got 3 different protein supplements to try at Wal-Mart in the energy bar/slim fast/fiber aisle:
1. Carnation Instant Breakfast energy drink- 0g sugar added (4-pack in a light blue carton)
2. EAS AdvantEdge Carb Control Shake (4-pack in a silver carton)
3. Aria Women's Protein Supplement power in a tall can (says it has "Award Winning Taste")
The Carnation and the EAS are both about equally as good. Make sure they're COLD and then I even add a couple of ice cubes. They're smooth and fairly tasty. The Aria powder in milk was yucky! Gritty. And I would not give it's taste any awards! My instruction packet says that when I start protein supplements (next week!), don't by Ensure, Boost, Glucerna, or Slim Fast, etc. because they are 'meal replacements' and too high in carbs and fat. I do really want to follow the rules because I want this to work! I want to do it right and not jeopardize anything, especially because I had to pay for this dang surgery myself! So, at first, I was feeling guilty about adding the protein drinks before I was "supposed" to, but now, after how much better I feel, I can see that my body just can't go that long without protein! I'm gonna have to talk with my doctor about his diet schedule! Anyway, good luck to you and hang in there! Don't do something you'll regret later, but take care of your body's needs! We can do this!
Make sure you do a product review of what you like and don't like to help others out! I have found that BariatricEating.com has the best selection of Protein drinks. I like the Elite series of drinks and when mixed with cold lactaid 1% they taste really good compared to everything else I have tried and they have (w/lactaid) a whopping 30g of protein. Two shakes a day and you have your 60grams!
HTH! Jamie
Hi Nancy,
Yea, it was laparoscopic - surgery on Tuesday am, home Thursday about noon! Tuesday was great - still under lots of anesthesia and pain meds, felt pretty darn good. Wednesday was more of a reality check - more pain and thinking geez, I'm really supposed to go home tomorrow? Then Thursday morning was a new day, felt much better and knew I could go home. Good luck to you!
Hi, boy was I glad to see your post!!! My surgery was 1/21/05 and I came home in the afternoon on the 23rd. My Dr. has me on pureed for 4 weeks then I go to soft foods. I had a meltdown on Friday. I was so depressed and just cried and cried to my husband that I was sure my surgery didn't work b/c I feel like I can eat more than they say I should at this point, and to boot I feel hungry again in less than 1/2 an hour. He justed held me, told me that he didn't want me to be sad and said he was sure it would be fine, "or they'll just have to fix it". So simple..... But atleast now I know I'm not the only one. The refried beans everyone is talking about, is that on pureed? If so does it need to go in the blender or is it soft enough? Sorry, long post. I can just SO relate...
Hey Pat,
I was looking at BariatricEating.com and clicked on "Ask Susan Maria...FAQ's". When I read this, it was very helpful since I've been so hungry since surgery. Hope this helps!
From Susan Maria Leach's BariatricEating.com website:
"Q: I am only a week post op and I can drink an entire protein shake, have I stretched out my pouch?
A: You cannot stretch out your pouch with liquids. It pours in and dribbles out. If you are sipping slowly it is smoothly running through your pouch. Even if the drain in the sink is half closed the liquid wont back up as long as you are pouring it in slowly. Once you start eating more solid foods, like shrimp or chicken, you will see just how small your pouch is and that it is intact."
Robin, thank you for that lin****il I read your post I thought for sure it was "just my luck ' that this hadn't worked... And when my husband was cooking BBQ chicken for himself last week, I almost forgot that I love him. It smelled so good and my stomach was gurgling so bad. I quess I didn't think about it that it was not going to take the cravings away or keep me from smelling something and wanting it. Boy, what a learning curve we are in. Hope all is well with you and have a great evening.
