Hi all, I got my insurance approval last week and am scheduled to have lap RNY on January 31st! I'd love to hear from anyone else who has a similar date. I think it's so cool there is a forum just for us January surgeries. Hope all preops & postops are doing well. Take care! Mary Ellen Highest weight: 280 Current weight: 258 Goal: ??

Hi Mary Ellen! I also have a Jan 31 surgery date. I am also having a Lap RNY. Are you getting as nervous as I am? It has been almost 2 years since I first started looking into WLS. Now, sometimes I feel like I need more time, but I don't really. I am soooo ready for this! it's time I was healthy and able to do the things I have always dreamed about, like running, and buying clothes off the rack.... wow.. I can't wait. How about you, are you getting butterflies in your tummy? take care Susie

Mary Ellen, MY date is jan. 31st! Only I am in California! too bad! I am happy for you, hope all goes well. How are you feeling, are you nervous? I am okay, one day I want to get it over with and the next I am wondering if I really want to do this! I would have been better had I stayed OFF the boards tonight! I have a nissen fundiplication and just read the profile of a lady who had complications due to that. sigh..... Irene

Aloha Marry Ellen, I live in Hawaii and will be having my surgery the same day you are however it will be about 5000 miles away. I would tell you to expect a few things (im sure you know already) When you have to have the Gastrograffin swallow to test for leaks you can expect the liquid to taste like soap..... I will pray for you and hope you do well.. Aloha Dave

I've got a Jan 31 date, too! But I'll be in southern Michigan! Just got the date this morning. I'll be having mine Open Roux-en-y, with Dr. Jon Schram of the Barix clinics. Best wishes to you and all AMOS members! May we all be big losers together! Hugs, Karen Current (highest) weight 327 Height: 5'9" Goal? 160? (I was originally thinking maybe 145 but that might be a bit too low, for my height and build.) (where but on AMOS would you find a bunch of people so OPEN about their weight and size!!!!!) LOL! Size clothing: 4x or 28 ... had to wear a size 32 wedding dress this past August... looking forward to my 1 year anniversary and being 6 months out!!!

Thanks for all the replies!! It's nice to know that there are several other surgery "buddies" for the 31st. We are making such a change in our lives...for the better! I do get nervous as the date approaches, especially since in my 40 years I've have never had any type of surgery and I hate needles, etc. But, I've been waiting a long time to have this....had to do 1 yr of medically-supervised weight loss and along the way encountered some road blocks with changes in insurance requirements and having to find a new surgeon because the original one stopped doing WLS due to most of the major malpractice insurance companies pulling out of the state. But all is good now, I found a great surgeon (albeit 3 hours away from where I live) who has done more than twice the number of WLS as the original doc and who is in a practice where WLS is all they do. And the hospital I'm going to has a special floor just for WLS surgery patients, so the staff is specially trained to handle the needs of morbidly obese patients, etc. I sometimes worry about the complications or possibility of dying from this, but mentally I am at a point where I know where I was headed if I DIDN'T have surgery. I'm a believer in that if something wasn't meant to happen, then it doesn't and have faith that my higher power wouldn't have let me endure the obstacles to get here if this wasn't the road for me to travel. I'm also trying to prepare myself mentally by concentrating on positive, healing thoughts that I wil have a successful, complication-free surgery and recovery. I think it's great we can come here and be honest, especially about our true weight! I spent most of my life trying to hide the numbers from others and being in denial about it myself. It was just last year, that after 11 years of marriage I finally told hubby the exact numbers (like he couldn't have guessed). I did have to lose weight as required by my insurance and cannot gain any because the surgeon's office told me that if I gained any weight by the time of my preop visit (which is on the 26th), then he'll cancel my surgery. So, looks like no last suppers or treating myself before surgery. It's a good thing though, gotta go into this prepared and knowing my relationship with food will forever be changed. Sorry for the long, rambling post! Guess I just need to really talk with people about this, especially those who know what I'm going through. Let's keep each other posted about our progress! I am so glad to see that many other people are having surgery on the 31st! I am in Miami and I will be having Lap RNY surgery. I'm in the very last stage of pre-op since I will be having my blood and urine work done today at the hospital so that my PCP can give his final clearance. Yippee! Up until now I have been very excited about the surgery - that is up until yesterday. I had a sharp pain near my kidneys yesterday and for the first time I had the fear that this may not happen for me. I was so terrified that perhaps I had kidney stones and that this would somehow interfere with my surgery date (and my scheduled leave from work) that I panicked and left work immediately. Thankfully it was muscular and I was prescribed pain medication and now I am much better. But funny how the mind works - as soon as my PCP gave me his diagnosis I felt MUCH better. I had been so afraid that after this long journey I was going to have this last obstacle to prevent me from reaching my goal. PHEW! Boy am I able to breathe easier today. Good luck to all and I hope we all have complication-free surgeries and fast recoveries. I am so convinced that this is the right decision for me, I hope that all of you feel the same way. Take care, Selfi Highest Weight: 283 Current Weight: Unknown (I started the protein shake diet on this week - I think I have lost a few pounds - people started commenting already which made me so happy since that means less people who will have to know about the surgery) Goal Weight: 230 (I'm 5'1")

Great job on the weight loss! I've been told it's better if we can lose weight before the surgery because it helps shrink the liver and lessen possibility of the surgeon knicking it or liver obstructing his view of the stomach, etc. I'm down to 256 and have been holding there for the past 3 days. This puts me 1-1/2 pounds below my consult weight.....yay!!! Mary Ellen
