Surgery 1-24-05- Anyone worry about blood clots?

8 days till surgery for me. I'm having VBG in Houston, Texas by Dr. Beryl Harberg. My biggest fear is blood clots. Does anyone know if this is a big problem? For the last 8-9 yrs, my platelets have been on the high side, in the 500,000's. Have been to 3 different Hematologists and they all say there's really nothing wrong, they would be more concerned if they were too low and if I wanted I could take a baby aspirin a day, but I was more at risk for clots. Since they have been high, I have had my gallbladder removed and a DNC without any problems. I just wonder if this type of surgery is more likely to produce clots? And, when are you out of the woods for them? Is it a few days post op or a few months, etc? Anyone else have this problem or concern before/after surgery? And, if you have a clot, how will you know? Thanks!

Hi Lia, It isn't a huge problem but it is always a concern with surgery. They will probably give you heprin shots after the surgery to keep your body from getting clots. I know they did with me Don't obsess about it or everything will make you think your getting one. I promise you;ll be fine and the risk is highest right after surgery. As long as you walk after surgery you should be okay it keeps the blood flowing. Good luck!!! B

Lia, I just met with my new surgeon and he went over everything and he said every surgery has the same risk with blood clots in your legs WLS is no different. You just are not given the risks when you have other surgeries. Hope this helps. My surgery is 1-31-05,
