This is my story so far...
OK I was scheduled for surgery (originally) on Dec 21, 2004. My pre op blood work showed that there was an very high white blood cell count (wbc). I was then told that I cannot have the surgery until they can determine what is causing this as there were no visiable signs of infection.
So I went back to my PCP (Who by the way has been very supportive) and she ran some more blood and the wbc was even higher... She then got me an appointment with a hemotologist/oncologist who ran even more tests. The tests he ran on me ranged from arterial blood gasses to a liver/spline scan. After all of that he couldnt find anything wrong with me either.. He then faxed the results to my surgeons office and told them I was good to go for surgery. YEAH ME!!!
This was all the week of Christmas! I was then told by the insurance company that if I do not have the surgery by the end of Dec that they WOULD NOT cover the surgery as of Jan 01, 2005. After jumping through several hoops with them, it was then decided that they would approve again even if it was after Jan 01, 2005. LUCKY ME!!!
So my surgery was rescheduled for Jan 06, 2005!!!!! My sister arrived from California (I live in VA) and was with me from Dec 29,2004 through my hospital discharge on Jan 08, 2005. I love her so much for her support!. She actually stayed in the hospital room with me on a very uncomfortable couch.
I arrived at the hospital at about 6:45am with my devoted boyfriend and my always reliable sister. A co-worker also showed up as she was unsure that I had enough support. Thanks Vicki I love you too.
I should have known that it was not going to be easy when the nurse blew the first vein she tried to put the IV into. The second one was better but still very painful. I remember laying in the room talking to my sis, boyfriend and co-worker and the next thing I remember was the OR staff talking to me in the recovery room. Dr. Terracina (My Godsent Surgeon) came in and said it went well with only one complication. The complication was that I had a hienal (sp?) hernia (I had no idea I even had that). He stated that he fixed that first and then started on the RYN. He also stated that he was able to do all of this laproscopically!!! YEAH!!. My sister is in the medical field in Califonia and she knew that after the 2 hours of me being under that something had gone wrong but was very secure with my surgeons ablility to fix anything that went wrong.
I was then taken to my room (all rooms at this hospital are private!!!) where my visitors were very glad to see me. They of course asked all the usual questions like how are you feeling? Are you in pain? You really made it through!!!. It was nice to have them there... I love them alot.
So here I am 7 days post op and ready for the next part....Off clear liquids and onto soft food.
Thanks for reading,
Barbara
Congratulations to you! I am glad that everything worked out in your favor. I had my surgery done Nov 30 so I am not that far ahead of you. It goes pretty easy. I have lost 23 lbs already. I also had a hernia repaired that I had no idea was even there. All I know is I have had such bad heartburn for years, and never knew why. I could not eat or drink anything with out getting heartburn so bad. Now NO more heartburn no matter what I eat. Good luck! Carrie
Carrie,
Thanks for your response. Iam not sure of what my current weight loss is, as I have not purchased a scale yet but me and some girlfriends are going to today to get one. 23 lbs is EXCELLENT!!! you go girl. About the hernia, I too had had heartburn for years... I couldnt eat a meal without chugging down many onces of liquids with it. It is so nice to not have to do that anymore... Well I am actually still on liquids so I dont know for sure but as far as you say, Im good to go.
Thanks for your response.

Hi Barbara! Congratulations on your success! Sorry to hear that you ran into some snags... but it sounds like all is doing well! I am scheduled to have surgery Jan. 18th but tonight I received a phone call from my primary care doc that I had an elevated white blood cell count!!! I am very nervous that my surgery will be post-poned! Did your doc ever say what caused your wbc count to be high? Will the elevation prolong your healing? Well wish me luck as I will find out what's what tomorrow! All the best!
Regards,
Teresa
