Smoker here...er, well, former smoker
I quit over Thanksgiving Weekend, the weekend before my Surgical Consult with my surgeon. I knew I was going to have to quit, and I knew I wanted the surgery...so I talked to my PCP about taking something to help me quit, and he gave me a script for Wellbutrin. It worked great...After about three weeks, I just stopped...I hardly even miss it anymore
Good luck!
After trying to quit smoking unsuccessfully TWICE... my aunt told me about her father--83 yrs old--who was able to quite using Commit lozenges--4 mg.. They did it for me...I was able to get past the horrible craziness of the nicotine withdrawal...took about 7 months off and on...worked my way down eventually to the 2 mg strength.
I also chewed on straws...so between the nicotine "fix" of the COMMIT lozenges and the oral gratification of straws, it was fairly painless.
That was about 2 yrs ago. COMMIT lozenges are available over the counter at almost any drug store....they seem expensive...but with the price of ciggies now days...it's worth it... not to mention the OBVIOUS health benefits. My doc says quitting smoking was more important health wise than the weight loss...and I'm def obese.
The ability to figure out a way...with some help...of quitting smoking-- using whatever it took...is what gave me the Power and Determination to go ahead and get my WLS done. I know if I can quit smoking...with a little medical help...and STAY QUIT...I have the discipline to follow the right food program...with a Medical Help of the WLS -- lap band.
Good luck, Gail
surgery coming soon!
Ex-smoker here!! LOL....listen I'd 'quit' smoking for years then start again...smoke then stop...you get the picture...course I'd just get tired of smoking and stop...no real incentive.......then I decided I really wanted this wls...my surgeon will not do the surgery if you're a smoker and believe me they DO check your blood when they do the arterial gas thingy, so I just put them down! I mean what do you want more? A smoke ( and I know it's hard at first) or a second chance w/life having the surgery? For me it was an easy decision....flush em...and get some straws....start walking when you feel the urge, read more, start knitting, anything that will help ya...and now is the time to do it...when you know you'll be losing weight w/surgery!! not to mention the overall health benifits---Best to you, darlin.
