I am on my liver shrinking diet for two weeks (surgery 1-20-05). I can handle the liquid and shakes fine but the bouillion is murder! My dh gave me a solution. He took a roast and pressure cooked it and took the juice and put it in the refrigerator. Once cold, the fat became solid on top and he took it out. It is the BEST broth!!!!! He will try chicken later the same way! So far I have lost about 10 pounds in 5 days! But I am still looking forward to the WLS.

Karen, Try taking your favorite soups (chicken noodle, vegetable beef, etc.), cooking them like normal, and draining the broth into a coffee cup & sip away. It's been the best way for me to get through this first post-op week. Good luck! Amanda

My favorite soups are the one's my dh makes. He is a wonderful cook. Dr. Shina said I could not have any vegies or anything other then meat in the broth. But when I am post-op I will try your idea. Thanks.

I read in another one of your posts that you're on a liver shrinking diet because you're having your surgery laprosopically. Do you know why your surgeon wants to shrink your liver? Is this something that all of us should be doing? Just curious....I want to reduce my odds of developing complications as much as possible!

Dr. Shina and Dr. Geller both are requiring their lap patients to go on the liver shrinking diet. My understanding is the liver is right in front or next to the stomach. By shrinking the liver, the doctor will have more room to work with the lap tools as well as get to the stomach easier. It makes sense to me. I am trying to do everything possible to have this a safe and successful surgery. Dr. Shina told me Friday that I can have meat, cheese and eggs but NO carbs. So I am eating a little meat or the meat broth with jello once a day and doing the protein shakes and sf drinks the rest of the day. But I am finding that I get hungry faster after I eat the meat then when I just stay with the protein shakes. The hardest day I had was the second day. I have one more week to go then I go on a clear liquid diet for 2 days before the WLS. I am really surprised that I am not missing any kind of food. Thank the Lord! I think He is getting me through this time. I don't think I could have made it on my own!
