Uh oh. I am having my surgery on the 7th and it will be a laproscopic RNY. No one has said anything about a liquid diet a week and/or even a day before my surgery. I am hoping different doctors have different ideas. My pre-op will be on the 6th and that will be the first time I will have actually had a one on one discussion with my doctor. Ok, now I'm getting nervous. I think, just to be on the safe side, I will start a liquid diet tomorrow. Hopefully it will cut down on any yucky side effects. Surely there is a good reason for doing this. Oh well, I'm just rambling now, please keep me in your prayers and I will do the same for all of the January soon to be losers. God bless, Charlene

Hi Charlene, I am having surgery on January 10th. The day before surgery I have a clear diet, and then at 4pm on the day before I take a laxitive drink to clean me out. Alot of fluids, and nothing after 12pm. Good luck and God Bless Pat

Hi Charlene, Congrads on your surgery date. Just finished 2 days of clear liquid diet and bowel prep. The liquid diet consisted of jello, apple juice, tea, coffee, popsicles, and chicken broth . If you have to do a bowel prep use alot of baby wipes. I had to mix the bowel prep with ginger ale Your doctor will give you all the information you need for your surgery. Best wishes Tammie G. loser in less than 7 hours

Charlene, I will follow up with replies to this post in that I'm also having laproscopic RNY next week (1/12). My doctor didn't put me on a liquid diet ahead of time - the day before I will take laxatives and be on a clear liquid diet but that is all. Then I don't have anything whatsoever after midnight just before my surgery. Good luck! Elaine

Hi Charlene. I am having surgery the Jan 10 and have to do a 5 day clear liquid diet. My dr. explained to me that not everyone he sees has to do this. He said that it is because of the way my body is shaped. Most all my weight, or fat, is around my middle. He said that because there is so much there that it will hinder his view and by doing the liquid diet it would shrink down my organs and give him a better view for the laproscopic procedure. I have several friends who have also had surgery and ate right up to the last day. So don't be too worried. If your dr hasn't said anything to you by now, he probably has no problem with your body shape. Hope this helps. Take care and good luck on your surgery!! Sharon

Thanks Sharon, I think I will start Wednesday to try and stay on all liquids. Most of all my weight is around my middle also, and since I won't be seeing him until the day before, it couldn't hurt to be on the safe side. I am so ready for this, so I might as well get in some practice. And if it will make it easier for him surgically, I'm for it! Maybe it will make it easier on me too. (wishful thinking). I hope all goes well for you. We will be making this journey together this year and I've heard that supporting each other is very important. Please keep me updated on your progress and experiences and I'll do the same. Keeping you in my prayers. God bless, Charlene

Hello All, My lap is scheduled for this Friday and I have been on an all liquid diet since last Wednesday. As already mentioned earlier by someone else, my doctor and nutritionists have their patients drink nothing but ICB (Instant Carnation Breakfast) or high-protein supplements (and any other no-calorie liquids) for a week before surgery to shrink as much abdominal fat and especially fat around the liver. I also think it gets you into the mindset of "NOT CHEWING." I have to say it hasn't been as bad as I thought. Hot beef and chicken broth was a life saver on a couple of days! My sister is one week post-op today and doing very well. Have to call and check up on her this afternoon! Kristi

I've met with my surgeon twice and I don't have to be on a liquid diet until the day before surgery and I am having an OPEN RNY. It really is just the preference of the doctor. They give us laxatives to clean us out anyway. Maybe they don't if you've been on liquids for a week. I wouldn't worry, if they wanted you to be on one, they would have communicated that to you... Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Blessings, Carolyn

Hi Charlene, Great to hear... will put in a few prayers for you. AND yes all Doc's are different on this, I have to go one day before surgery just liquids and nothing after midnight.
