Hi Nicole, I am actually having the Surgery on January 11th - in Portland Maine. But - I grew up just north of Hartford, and lived there all my life - will always consider it home (your subject line caught my interest). Wishing you the best of luck!! Rachel

That is so funny, I am in So. Windsor. My daughter, Amanda, goes to the University of So. Maine in Portland/Gorham. She lives in Portland. I wish you the best of luck also. I am not scared of the operation or the banding, just of the GAS PAINS everyone talks about!

To make this all just a little more bizarre - I am a student at the University of Southern Maine - most of my classes are in Portland but I do have chemistry next semester in Gorham. What program is she in? I am a nursing major. I grew up in East Hartland - have you ever heard of it? Rachel

Not East Hartland-East Hartford. I am a realtor in Ct. Amanda is a Chem. major. -Biology minor student, but may switch to Biology major. She lives off campus right near the Portland campus this year. She is in a big Victorian home with 4 others. She is in her 2nd year and loves Maine. She works at the Home Store. She is in a sorority-phi-meu(spelling?) You must be young??? I am 39 and have been trying to loose weight since my second child, Ryan, for 16 years now. I know people who have had both lap and bypass and this seems more logical to me. What is East Hartland by? Never heard of it. You should look up my daughter. Maby you are in a class together!!! That would be funny!!!! She is home now, going to Canada for New Years then coming back to take me into surgery. My husband hates hospitals and thinks I am not "fat" and even though he supports me, I don't think he likes it too much that I am doing this. He can come later in the day. Take care-Nicole

Hi Nicole, East Hartland is right between Granby and Winsted - where Route 20 & 179 meet. I am not surprised that you don't know where it is. Last I knew the population was at like 2000 people or something like that. As far as being young? well - not really. I am 27 and have fought with my weight since I was a very young child (like age 10). I noticed that you said you are having Gastric Banding done. Unfortunately - here in Maine they don't do gastric banding, so I am having the gastric bypass done. I could quite possibly have had classes with your daughter. I am a nursing major / biology minor. I am in my Junior year and will most likely graduate in December of 2006. As far as the whole sorority thing - I am not the "traditional" student, I am what they call a commuter student so I really don't delve into student activities much. Many of the houses directly surrounding the University are wonderful old victorian homes that look huge! My husband luckily is quite used to hospitals - because I work in one. I think he is dreading the long time he has to wait for me during surgery. He mentioned that he had to go out and get a couple of books to read lol. It is funny to find someone with something in common on one of these boards. Talk to you later. Rachel

Hi Rachel, I know where is is now. Iwas just showing homes in Granby a couple of weeks ago. It is about 20-25 min. from me. I have a friend who had the bypass done, she had a leak and was in the hospital for a month. She pulled through though, and is down 140 lbs in 15 months. She looks sooooo good. She is like a size 4 now. She has had many things happen to her, both of her parents passed away with in a month of eachother and she lost like 30 lbs from that. I am worried about her because she does not eat anything but protein bars and she needs to start eating regular foods. She has gone too far the other way. I feel that way anyhow, but she has had soooo much to deal with that it is hard to try to talk to her about it. I had to start liquids today and I went out last night with a girlfriend and had many drinks and ate mexican food so I am sorta not too hungry anyway, but thinking about not eating now for 3 weeks is sorta sick!! I hope I can do it! Talk to you soon-Nicole
