Post-Op Question
I have a question for any post ops out there. I am wondering how long after you got home from the hospital you were able to do things like climb stairs, sit up and type on the computer, drive, and other everyday things. I am planning on having a lap RNY on January 6th, and return home on the 9th. Will I be able to resume working from home that week? HELP, I have to be on several conference calls that week for work.
Lauren,
First of all congratulations on your surgery date!
These are all questions your doctor will have to answer. My surgeon has said no driving for 2 weeks (mine is scheduled for the 12th and I will be in the hospital for 4 days) and has said that most people who have no complications can return to work in 2 - 3 weeks. In addition, they will have me walking withing 4 hours of getting out of surgery. However, ever doctor is different and it would be critical to talk to your doctor about it before surgery.
Things like talking on the phone, sitting at the computer, and sitting up is going to depend on your level of pain an energy level, but definately call your doctor's office to find out about driving, climbing stairs, etc.
I know there will be demands of us made after surgery and life doesn't stop but don't forget to take time for yourself to heal and get used to your new life.
Good luck! I'm very happy for you - just a short time to go!!

The sooner you get off the pain medication the better. You will be able to function for the conference calls. The first night after the operation you should rest, but the very next day begin walking. The sooner you get up, the better off you will be. My sister had me up immediately and then I had everyone on the floor up walking with me the next day.
I was up walking right away. I didn't climb stairs but I live on some steep hills and I was out walking them everyday. Sitting was tough for me the first week and a half. Being up walking around was much easier! You'll probably feel tired the first week but once you are off the pain meds, you'll be ok. I was off work for 3 weeks and then went back. Just make sure you walk lots and do your breathing treatments regularly!
Best of luck! God bless!

I have talked to several people at a support group meeting I also have the concern of returning to school.(I am student) They said they were driving as soon as they were off the pain meds. and that they were back to work in 2-3 weeks depending on the job they had. They also all said about the walk and move as much as possible as soon as possible. Hope this helps I have surgery Jan 4th 2005 good luck.
