Topic: RE: Thyroid Question?
My girlfriend who had her thyroid removed and is on meds for the rest of her life - had the lapband. And my mother who had hypothyroid and is on meds - had the RNY July 10th. They just made sure her numbers (blood work) was OK immediately before surgery. Yes I believe the surgery will work and she should consult a surgeon. Also does she have a thyroid specialist.... it sounds like she needs one.

Topic: RE: All my Jan. brothers and sisters. How much have you lost!!!
Congratulations and happy losing to all. As for myself, my surgery was 1/20. I have lost 60 pounds to date. I had about a month where no weight came off but I did lose inches in that period so I wasn't worried. I try to keep my calories around 800 per day but that can swing 200 cal in either direction on any given day. I 've found that I can tolerate a larger quantity of food at lunch so that is when I eat my main meal. The evening meals seem to sit very heavy on my stomach. I prefer ff triscuits and cheddar cheese along with some raw fruit and/or vegetables for my main meal then a small portion of whatever my family is eating at dinner. Toast and peanut butter is my standard breakfast. Lots of walking and of course, Curves.

Topic: RE: Just a couple questions
I know three people in my support groups who came up pregnant within months of having the surgery. Two had been trying for years, thought they were infertile, then had a miracle baby after surgery. One went on a new birth control method, got pregnant then found out that type of birth control is not good for anyone over 200 lbs. All three had healthy babies but there were problems in the pregnancy due to lack of nutrition. One was on bed rest for five months, the other two were on bed rest for a month or two before the baby came. I suppose the lesson here is be very careful if you aren't ready for a new baby because losing weight makes some women more fertile. The longer out from surgery the better. You will be able to eat more at 18 months than you can at six months for example.

Topic: RE: Thyroid Question?
I'd suggest you post this on the main message board where people who have a thyroid problem might see it and answer from their experience. Thyroid problems are strange. I don't think the surgery will cure the thyroid problem. I do think with the right amount of medication for thyroid and the surgery she can lose weight. I know several people with thyroid problems and it seems the doctors can never get the medicaiton at one level and leave it there. Apparently the body doesn't metabolise it the same way all the time. The symptoms for high and low are the same so the patient never knows what is happening. Usually the doctors will increase the dosage one visit, then lower it the next visit, on occasion it stays the same, etc. It is a lifetime problem even for those that have to have the thyroid gland burned out. The good news is that with constant care the patient stays within a range that makes them feel fine.

Topic: RE: Count Cal/fat/carb??
I log my food on Fitday. Last month I was unhappy with my weight loss so I summarized the period from 4/9 to 5/8 and faxed my surgeon's nutritionist a note asking what I was doing wrong. Average Day Calories 611 (mostly meat) Fat 30 grams Carbs 32 grams Protein 53 grams She called and told me to cut my carbs below 20 which is Dr. Atkins induction (first 2 weeks). I was not eating the bad carbs (rice, potato, flour), but she didn't ask me that question just said to cut the carbs. People on the boards said I wasn't eating enough but she said my calorie intake was fine. Of course you might ask another nutritionist and get a different answer. I had my insides cut out so I could stay on Dr. Atkins? I had lost 58 lbs in 4 1/2 months pre-op on Dr. Atkins. I thought it was suppose to be easier after surgery but it seems for me it's just more of the same. Overall I am down 133 lbs and feeling great so if it takes more of the same I can do it. I've been given my life back and I am thankful. Best of luck to you on your continued wls journey.

Topic: Just a couple questions
I had a couple things I wanted to ask. Okay first is that I am 25. I have one child and right now I really am happy with just one. Has anyone heard of or know anyone that has had children after the surgery? Not really a huge issue right now because my surgeon said i should wait 2 years anyway. My next question is does anyone notice that they are getting more attention from the opposite sex. I have had guys i have known forever tell me how hot I was. Of course I thought this was awesome. And I notice more men looking at me. Not to point and pick on the "fat" girl, but really checking me out. I feel shallow loving the attention, but I do love it!!!!! Men I would've given my right arm to notice me are noticing me. I guess I just wanted to know if anyone else was noticing the same thing? Stacy (1/21/04, 225/152/120ish I hope)

Topic: RE: What are you all eating??
I can eat anything - fortunate or unfortunate? I averaged 611 calories last month. Breakfast: Dr. Atkins Morning Start cereal 1/2 cup (NO MILK) High protein, low carb Lunch: 3.5 oz meat (normally with Bar-B-Que or Heines 57 sauce) Veggie Dinner: 3.5 oz meat Veggie Snack Cheese or S.F. Popcicle I will on occasion eat a couple of pieces of s.f. candy but have not eaten any sugar since surgery. I try to stay completely away from rice, potato, flour, (bad carbs). I'm not perfect but take this seriously and try to follow my food plan to the letter. I work out in the gym 5 days a week for 30-45 minutes. Best of luck to all on your wls journey!
