Topic: 100 pounds mark crossed at last!
I have finally lost 102 pounds since surgery 1/20/04. Add the 58 pre-op for a total of 160 pounds. I can't imagine carrying a 160 pound person on my back every day, yet I did that before surgery. No wonder I could hardly walk. Many have lost faster, but I've been fortunate in my recovery and have not been sick or had many problems adjusting back to food. I have followed my surgeons food, water, and exercise program to the letter. Recently I increased my calories to 600-800 per his instructions. I work out 3 days a week on treadmill and cross country, two days a week I do weight machines. He explained my slow loss was due to (1) age 58, (2) diabetic for 18 years and (3) slow metabolism. The slow loss isn't fun, but in the end I will reach my goal weight. My journey is not over, I still need to lose 60 pounds and have plastic surgery to get rid of the last 30-40 pounds. I won't be able to avoid having the around the world surgery even if I have to do self pay. There is no stopping me now. This wonderful tool is going to allow me to do what I could not do on my own. Then the hard work starts, maintaining the lost weight. Life is great!

Susan- Bravo for having the guts to actually put this in print!!! I think that is a HUGE step in trying to get things back under control!!! I also have been haunted once again by my food addiction....I have done pretty good keeping it in check, I will not allow those "trigger" foods in my house.... I have found that eating every 2 1/2 hours works for me...this way, I say to myself....you will not "die" if you wait till your next scheduled meal.... Just know that you are not alone, and if you ever need to chat..I am here!! Lori 222/154.5/1?? laprny 1-6-04

Hi Kim, I am so sorry that you are not being positively supported by your family! It makes is so much greater when you are supported by those closest to you and you've known the longest. I have been so lucky, all my friends, co-workers, and family are THRILLED and constantly let me know how wonderful they think I am doing. I think I can honestly say the only negative thing anyone has said to me was my Mom saying that she worried I would regain the weight like I have done before. And that hurt, but I do realize that she means it not to be critical or negative, but as a genuine fear that once I have accomplished this great feat, I can not let my guard down - that it has to be lifelong! And deep down, I think we all fear that, after all, it has happened to all of us to a certain extent, or we wouldn't be wls patients, would we? I can only agree with the others who have replied to you, overlook your siblings and their possible jealousy (you can't change their mindset); instead still love them, listen to your positive friends and co-workers, and talk with your family about other stuff. Like the upcoming elections! Remember, you have an "extended family" here online any time you need us! Keep up the great job you are doing!!!!!! And remember what a friend of mine constantly tells me "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!" Sarah

Topic: MONA is back My Overwhelming Never-ending Appetite
Hi fellow Jan. WLS patients. I thought of this today and wrote it to be shared with others. I am afraid of Mona and I hope this helps put her in her place. I started at 270 pounds and now weigh 166! I have an eating disorder, I don't know if it is a social coping mechanism I've acquired in life, or a genetic hand me down from my ancestors. For the first 6 months after WLS I had a vacation from my eating disorder, but now it is back. Her name is MONA, My Overwhelming Never-ending Appetite. Mona has been with me since puberty. She expects to be fed 24/7. If not fed she makes me sick with headaches, nausea, insomnia. Mona even wakes me up at night to eat! When I do feed her, she is never satisfied. Mona is very persistent and persuasive. Last month she convinced me that chocolate and pistachio nuts are good low carb snacks! And I believed her!!. I have been eating about 4 cups of pistachio nuts each day and 200 to 500 calories of chocolate each day (or should I say night). This is grazing, this is Mona! She is lazy, selfish, and very immature. She doesn't like me to go to WLS support group meetings or go online for help. Mona wants me to stay isolated so she can have me all to herself. She tells me exercise is useless, it never made a difference before. Well Mona, now that you have a real name, I can recognize you for what you are. You are a self-centered liar who doesn't care about my health. You only care about food, anyway you can get it regardless of its consequences. So every time I hear you I recite this to myself; THINK THINK THINK DRINK DRINK DRINK PROTEIN PROTEIN PROTEIN ACTION ACTION ACTION Avoid grazing and grazing foods. Maintain a good level of activity. Record food on those grazing days. Don't beat yourself up over slips, increase water, protein and exercise. Try one day a week with only two meals. 09/13/04

Size 8 sounds wonderful to me. However you obviously want to lose more. I will pass along a tip someone gave me. This lady was 15 pounds from goal, had been on a 4 month plateau when she heard of the Stillman diet. She went on it and lost 6-7 pounds in one week. I remember she gained back a pound or two when she came off but I don't remember if it was 1 or 2 pounds. I went on it last month and lost 11 pounds in 9 days, then regained 2 pounds when I came off of it. I did my normal low carb Dr. Atkins 600-700 calories a day for the next three weeks and lost 3 pounds. This past week I did Stillman again and have lost 8 pounds in 9 days. Like you I have done everything based on my doctors plan. Work out in the gym for 45 minutes 5 days a week, etc but I was only losing 2 pounds every other week. I am hoping Stillman will be the answer to get me to goal. The diet is very restrictive. All you can eat is meat & eggs plus drink 80 oz of water a day. If you think you are interested go to the MSN search engine and type "Stillman diet". I'm sure other search engines have it but I tried one the other day that didn't have it. It is not a diet you stay on long term. It is a plateau breaker designed for 7-10 days. Best of luck in whatever you decide to do.
