2-3 lbs per wk?? Is this too slow?
Hi everyone, just a basic question. Since week 3, I have been losing a mere 2-3 lbs a week. It just seems that this is such a small amount compared to others. I see people who are losing 4-7 lbs a week and are much further out than I am. I guess what I'm looking for is to see what all the January folks are averaging. Yes, I KNOW we shouldn't compare ourselves, but I feel like I am really on the low side of losing. Any input?
Thanks
Kim R/az
I would say my average is about 1.5-2 lbs a week also. That's only an average, though -- I've gone three weeks without a budge and then dropped five the week after.
I feel like I'm on the low side of losing, too, and asked my surgeon about it at my last appointment. He said I didn't have a huge amount to lose (about 120 total) and that my loss will be slower than those who have significantly more to lose. We'll get there!

Hi KIm,
I wish I had words of encouragement for you, but I think I'm about the slowest loser on here and I'm getting discouraged myself. I like reading your post because I feel like you know what I'm going through.
I'm 5'8", on the day of my surgery (1/28/2004) I was 280 lbs. Wednesday will be 12 weeks and I have lost a total of 37 lbs. I had complications in the hospital (a leak) had to stay there for 15 days to fight an infection and then was sent home with skilled nursing care for 5 more days. I was a mess for about a month. I went through all this for 37 lbs. I do all the things we are suppose to do, food record, water, protein, exercise, and still I'm the slowest loser on the board. I worry every minute of the day that this surgery has failed or that I have failed in some way and I'm going to be like this for the rest of my life. My surgeon says I'm doing fine, my PCP said he was baffled by the slow loss. I don't know what more I can do. I'm open to any suggestions.
Millie,
I'm so sorry to hear about your complications. Thank God your doing better. I think we are probably the "norm" as far as our weight loss. I believe our BMI's were lower so were not going to lose as fast. This is what has been told to me anyway. We had surgeries 2 days apart and have a 3 lb difference in our weight loss. My surgeon says the same thing...that I am right on track and it is better to lose slowly than to have a drastic weight loss.
It's funny, because I know all these things, but it can get so discouraging when you see other people losing so much faster and dropping pounds and clothing sizes.
Keep doing what your doing...PROTEIN, WATER AND EXERCISE! We will get there! Slowly, but surely!
Good luck!

Hi Kim, My surgery was a day before yours(1-27-04) and I have only lost 43 lbs from day of surgery. I say I lost 50 now because I lost 7 lbs in the weeks before my surgery. I too wi**** were coming off faster, but really I am fine with the slow loss. Maybe our skin won't sag as much! Keep thinking positive! Lark Johnson
I was a lot larger than you when I started this journey, but my surgeion told me to expect the weight to go down like this:
First month 20-30 lbs
Second month 10-12 lbs
to sixth month
He also said I could base my total loss on the first six months like this:
Six months 100 lbs
2nd six months 50 lbs (1/2 of first six months)
3rd six months 25 lbs (1/2 of second six months)
They talk about an 18 month window of opportunity but I read where people who started out really large (like myself) are still losing at two years.
The truth is we are losing normally according to my surgeon, but we've read where a few have lost it super fast and expected to be in that group. Don't let false expectations to ruin this experience. My surgeon told me at my first visit that I could never expect to fit the weight charts because if I had a normal metabolism I'd never have been able to reach my weight. I figure as long as I follow the food and exercise plan there is nothing else I can do so I am going to relax and enjoy the positive things happening in my life. There are so many things I can now do that I would not have consider doing six months ago, I've decided I'm not going to let a number on the scale ruin this experience for me.
Best of luck to you.
Thank you Pat, I know I need to keep things in perspective. My surgeon told me that my weight loss would be slower as my BMI was on the low side (42). In the past, any diets I went on took full committment from me to lose ANY weight. My body just really struggles to take it off. I feel so much better with the loss I've had, I'm just impatient and of course want it gone today!
Thank you for your response.

I'm with all you girls!
I'm further out than any of you and haven't even hit a 50 lb loss yet and I started out at 304 with a BMI over 50=(
I know I'll get there but it is VERY discouraging at times.
Let's keep our chins up and continue to focus on what we have lost and we will get there!
Hugs,
Tracy
