Can I ever drink alcohol e.g. wine again????
I'm being a good girl and following my guidelines. It's not like I have ever been, or expect to be, a big drinker. Maybe once a month, or even less often, I would enjoy a glass of wine. I know all the guidelines are saying NO NO to this, and I can understand that they don't want people consuming high calorie drinks that have no nutritional value and could cause dumping, not to mentioning enabling someone who might have an addiction problem to alcohol. But I'm suddenly distressed by the thought that I can NEVER drink wine again. I'm wondering if at some point down the road I might again be able to drink an occasional 1/2 glass of wine. Does anyone know what actually happens if we slowly drink a small amount of an alcoholic beverege?
Margaret,
I sipped on some red wine the other day and was fine. I actually drank less than half of a glass, but I felt like I had enough. It went into my bloodstream pretty quickly, but I didn't have any dumping or discomfort. I just waited for my meal to settle before I had some, just like I would with any other beverage. It was yummy. Once a month or so isn't going to hurt me. I don't remember my doc saying I couldn't, so, I tried. No problem. Let me know what happens.
I think the main thing is they don't want you to have the empty calories and the high carbs. Plus the fact that it probably goes right to the blood stream as you said Laura. I think it's probably okay is small amounts and my booklet says to drink it very slowly. I had a half a glass of beer Saturday night and I was fine. I didn't dump or have any problems with it. I wouldn't try it until at least 6 weeks as the new tummy could get irritated from it possibly. I guess it's up to the individual and their physician as whether or not to try it. I know when I had my psych eval I had to sign a paper saying that I would not drink any alcohol.
Margaret, Well, I don't know for sure what each dr has to say about alcohol.. or when.. but I am 7 weeks out and I have tried a glass of wine and was fine. We had a Tx gathering yesterday in Galveston and most everyone who stayed for the whole day had a glass of wine or something. Of course, most of them were farther out than me.. but I had one and enjoyed it and didn't get too drunk and stepped on the scale and lost another couple of lbs this morning.. That is my adventure
was told when a "normal stomach" person drinks that if you drink too much your body tells you and you throw up.
When a gastric bypass person drinks it goes straight into our bloodstream and it doesn't breakdown and it affects us
faster and can cause us to drink to much before we realize it. that's where the problem is.
Right around the time I had surgery (1/12/04) they had just had the first reported case of a gastric bypass
person who died for alcohol poisoning.
Hope this helps,
Cindy
Hi Margaret,
You can drink alcohol again you just have to be very careful. there is a lot of great advice here, definitely try it at home first, you don't want to dump your first time trying it. I know plenty of people who have had the surgery and drink. But it is very modest and not very often. Pace yourself and always remember that alcohol is going to affect you very differently than it has before. But in all I would wait a couple of more months before trying it. Good luck!!!
