Will the Scale Ever Move Again???

As you can see I'm not a happy camper with my scale. I'm now 4 weeks post op...and have only lost 18 lbs...and the scale hasn't moved in two weeks. I know I'm suppose to be patient...but that's kinda hard to say when you have so many high hopes. Just think....I was the one before surgery saying I'd rather loose my weight gradually....how quickly we change our minds... I have a question...how much are you able to eat? Especially those in the 3-5 week post op stages. I hear so many different things...and I'm wondering if my stomach is allowing me to eat too much. Depending on what it is...I can eat about 3-4 ounces. Is this normal so early in the game? Or should I be eating less? Here lately I haven't been eating too much of anything...because I get so tired of chewing that I just stop eating. So I'll just go drink a protein drink instead. Now its funny because most people say they can't tolerate milk, sweets, carbs, etc. The couple of things I've tried....I didn't have any problems. Are you all having the same problems? Do you get tired of food? Or get so hung up in what you can't have...that the foods you can..don't sound tasty? JW

Hi...I'm 4 weeks post op. I am able to eat about 2 1/2 ounces of protein at one time, maybe 3 oz if I'm hungry and my pouch is absolutely empty. I hate the protein shakes so I am taking the shake only once a day for 25 grams of protein and getting the rest from real food. I enjoy eating my food. I try to get in at least 70 grams daily and so far have been able to do that. I'm eating small amounts of carbs (bread, pasta, crackers) & vegetables and am so far tolerating milk. I drink about 1/4 cup of OJ in the morning mixed with water, and about 10-20 grams of sugar a day (but not more than 10 g at a time.) Maybe the problem isn't how much you're taking in at one time but how much you're taking in per day. Maybe it would be good for you to talk to a nutritionist to see if she/he would have any suggestions for you. Or maybe doing more walking and exercising would help kick up your metabolism. After I quickly lost about 28 pounds the scale stayed the same for more than a week. It's starting to drop again. If we're following our guidelines I think we need to trust our bodies. The weight will come off.

JW I can totally feel you. I had my laprascopic RNY on 1/7/04 and I feel like I'm at a stand still too. Of course, this has been a cycle week for me so I've been trying to blame it on that. I have lost 25 pounds so far and sometimes feel very discouraged like I'm not going to lose any more. After all, any diet I've ever been on in my life I have never lost even close to 20 pounds. Very discouraging but everyone keeps telling me that I will lose more but it takes time. I just keep trying to keep a positive outlook on things. Everyone's menus are different depending on the doctor but with the semi solid foods (i.e. pudding, cream of wheat, soups) I am allowed to eat 4 oz and no more even if you are not full. Now I am able to eat solid foods (i.e. seafood, tuna, etc.) and I have been told by my doctor to eat no more than 2 tbsp on 2 crackers or 2 oz even if I'm not full. He said my pouch will expand but he doesn't want it to expand too much now. My surgeon is very strict on what we can eat and when but I guess this is a good thing because he has a very high success rate as well. Good luck and keep a positive attitude! The scale will go down!!! Ky

Hey JW!! I also had my surgery Jan 13, 04. I have lost 20 pounds. I too am like you in that I have had no problems and I can eat 3-4 oz. Some days I can tolerate something that the next day I cannot but all in all I am doing pretty good. I even ate a york peppermint patty with no problems- it was verrrrrry goooooood. Just remember that the weight we lost is probably muscle that we are losing at this point. Once we start exercising more and becoming more active the weight loss will increase. Hang in there!! I am with you all the way!!! Lisa

Hi All, I have to join in here too. I also had surgery on the 13th. I've lost 28.7 and then the scale stopped moving. I know it will move again but it sure is discouraging. I only eat a fraction of what I used to. Today I am able to eat regular food but have only had some mashed potatoes and a yogurt smoothie plus my liquids. I know we just have to be patient, but man, it sure is hard at times. Best wishes to everyone!

I had lap RNY on 1-15-04 and in the first two weeks I lost 28.5 lbs. My scale has not moved since then. I will be four weeks on Thursday and it is so discouraging!!! I have found that I can eat anything: tuna, chicken, shrimp, fish, ribs, bread, lunch meats, cheese, and on and on.................... I don't know if this is a blessing or not. I can eat 3-4 oz. at a time and stick to three meals a day. I am supposed to get 64 oz. of water, but usually only make it to the 48 oz. mark. I hope we all start loosing again soon!!!!!

Im in the same boat as you guys..Had Lap DS surgery on 1/12, and was losing fast the first two weeks (20 lbs), then only 3-4 lbs since then and nothing for days..I am just like freaking out thinking this will be yet another failed diet or something. The last 3 days I wrote down all I was eating and drinking, and I am getting both my protein and my water in...So depressing..I feel relieved that I am not alone tho..thanks for posting

I can certainly relate. I had LAP RNY on 1/5/04. I lost 22 pounds in first 2 1/2 weeks, then nothing since. I is very discouraging, but in the rational part of my brain, I know it will move again...tell that to my irrational/scale obsessed part. I started soft foods last weekend, and it is getting better with each day as far as tolerating the food. I even upped the protein this week, but still the scale did not move....wait...it actually went UP a pound.

OH MY! Thank you for posting!@!! My surgery was on 1-15-04 and I lost 20 lbs first week, 5 lbs the second week, and 5 pounds last week. Then this week I went up a two pounds. I wonder if it because I started adding weights to my work out. Someone said that could be it. But this is the second time that I have stopped at a "step". As some call it. I can eat anything too. I haven't had a problem with any food that I have eaten. I am only on proteins now, and doing well with them. Not too bad! I am not craving any particular food yet, which is good. I eat slowly, and chew chew chew! Have you heard anything that will make the scale move? If so share with me!!! Debbie

Wow! I thought I was all alone thinking that this thing was just not working. I keep thinking that maybe my pouch is just too big. Maybe I am tolerating foods too easy. I have lost about 30 pounds and I had my surg. on Jan 14. I have been discouraged, crying and just not doing well. However, my main support person has been very encouraging. She says if I only lose 3-4 pounds a week....that I will lose 100 pounds in 6 - 7 months. I get tired of doing what I am told, and eating what I am told. When the fast food resturants have their specials on TV, I want to run out and buy all of them. Here is the scoop...for most of my life I have depended on food for comfort, friendship, control and love. Now that is suddenly gone. I am thankful I have such a supportive spouse. When I am crying about being lonely, I know it is because I cannot go out and buy the 5 for 5 at Arbys...not because of my spouse. I am tired of not losing weight fast enough. I guess I wanted the surgery one day and skinnyness (is that a word?) the next.... Good luck and thanks for posting
