I've been reading all of these messages about protein shakes and I'm really feeling left out. My Dr. hasn't said anything to me except drink at least 4 glasses of liquid each day and no more than 8 glasses. That's it!!! It's all I can do to get THAT liquid in so I can't imagine anything else but......why haven't I been told to worry about protein?
The protein shakes are a great way to get protein in first thing in the morning. Each can had 20 grams of protein and gives your body energy fuel it needs. The Atkins shakes are the best. Try them! They come in two flavors of choc., Vanilla, and Strawberry. You can put them in a blender with some ice and make a frosty! Wanda
My doctor did not have us on only protein shakes after surgery, first 2 weeks we were on Jell-o and broth. But once we started on food he did say that we needed to suppliment our protein whether it is protein shakes or liquids or whatever means we found that works with us to make sure we get in our daily amount. It's hard to do that with just food since we can only eat so much in a day.
All docs are different. I am into my second week postop and we are required to drink 5 6oz protein shakes as our meals and then all the regular liquids which must total 64oz. The dietitian says this helps us burn our fat and not muscle mass by feeding our bodies protein. This is not counting the shakes so you really have to be drinking something all the time. The dietitian at the doctor's office meets with you on each visit. They have specific protein shakes and give you the receipt. The first week we can to drink Isopure Sport zero carb clear drink. It was terrible.
Our docs even tell us exactly what foods to eat at week three and four and what the protein and calorie count is. They want us to have no more than 600 cal a day for the first 6 months. There regiment is very strict and you follow up at 1wk, 2wk, 4wk, 3m, 6m, 9m and 1yr to begin with if all is well. Pat
