Dr. Matthew Weiner is a leading voice in weight loss and bariatric surgery, known for his down-to-earth, forward-thinking, and evidence-based approach to managing weight. He earned his medical degree from the University of Michigan and completed his surgical residency at New York University Hospital. After practicing in suburban Detroit for 12 years, he made Tucson his home in 2019 and launched Pound of Cure Weight Loss in 2023, Tucson’s premiere comprehensive weight loss center.
Dr. Weiner and the Pound of Cure Weight Loss team believe in tailoring weight management strategies to fit each individual, challenging the misconception that willpower alone determines weight. They focus on proven methods to lower the body’s metabolic set point—the weight our bodies naturally defend. Pound of Cure integrates personalized nutritional counseling, Dr. Weiner’s acclaimed Metabolic Reset Diet, cognitive behavioral therapy, online education, the use of weight loss medications like GLP-1 medications (Ozempic, Zepbound, Wegovy, and Mounjaro), and proven surgical techniques when appropriate.
Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Weiner is a published author with three books on bariatric surgery and weight loss and even a bariatric cookbook. He also co-hosts the Pound of Cure Weight Loss Podcast with Zoe Schroeder, Pound of Cure’s in-house Registered Dietitian, where they share practical insights and guidance on navigating the weight loss space.
In his downtime, Dr. Weiner enjoys playing tennis and cherishes time with his family—including his wife, his two daughters, and his dog, Maizey.
Dr. Matthew Weiner and the Pound of Cure Weight Loss team are dedicated to helping individuals achieve sustainable weight loss through compassionate care, expertise grounded in research, and a friendly, realistic approach.

Join Dr. Matthew Weiner, a Bariatric Surgeon and Weight Loss Specialist, as he reviews the potential for combining medical and surgical treatments for optimal weight loss. Our body weight is governed by an internal setpoint that works to keep our body fat stores consistent. Just like our blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate are internally regulated, our body weight is also regulated by a robust neurohormonal system that often works against our dieting efforts. Any successful weight loss plan must aim to lower this setpoint rather than fight against it.
To achieve significant, durable changes to your setpoint, combining lifestyle changes, GLP-1 medications, and surgical interventions may be necessary. The overwhelming success rates of Bariatric Surgery and GLP-1 medications clearly demonstrate that obesity is a metabolic disease best treated by medical therapies. Those who continue to preach increased discipline and willpower as the optimal treatment are offering unhelpful and outdated advice that should be ignored.
Rather than viewing nutrition, medication, and surgical options as mutually exclusive, optimal treatment lies in the combination of these approaches. In the past, it was believed that most patients would reach their lowest postoperative weight 1-2 years after surgery and that weight regain after surgery was largely untreatable. However, GLP-1 medications have proven both statements wrong. A multimodal approach to the treatment of obesity offers nearly every patient the opportunity to reach their ideal body weight.
