Lipedema is the disproportionate increase of subcutaneous adipose tissue of the lower abdomen and limbs primarily in women. Women with lipedema have a pear versus an apple shape and do not have the same metabolic disease as women with obesity of the abdomen. There are now many proven differences in lipedema tissue compared to tissue from people living with obesity. Dietary and bariatric surgery studies show that lipedema tissue is resistant to usual measures of weight loss, therefore knowing that you have lipedema is important before undertaking weight loss measures. After this talk, you will be familiar with lipedema and how it is different than non-lipedema obesity. Lipedema is oftentimes confused with other diseases of fat tissue, so this talk will cover some of these diseases as well.
