Saturday Speaker: Rae Brooks, MSN, PhD, RN

Dr. Rae Brooks is a researcher of bariatric surgery outcomes. She obtained a Ph.D. studying long-term outcomes in the bariatric surgery population at the University of San Diego. Rae is five years post-op VSG and would like to share her research on weight regain in women post-bariatric surgery.

Dr. Brooks has been a registered nurse for over 20 years and practiced in the areas of ICU, trauma, and critical care. She practiced critical care nursing at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) for eight years and at Sharp Healthcare for over 10 years. In 1999, Dr. Brooks completed a masters degree in nursing and began teaching as a professor and obtained tenure at two academic institutions.

Dr. Brooks is married to her husband of 25 years and they have one son. Her son was a nutrition major at Cal Poly Pomona. He planted and cultivated their families' love for weightlifting. (He's in the picture.)

Dr. Brooks was awarded the "Nurses Touch Award" by the nationally recognized Assessment Technology Institute in Nursing Organization and the "Nurse Educator of the Year" award by Point Loma Nazarene University. She was nominated as a Howell Scholar from the Doris A. Howell Foundation which is a foundation dedicated to "making a long-term positive impact on women's health." She has presented on the topic of long-term outcomes in bariatric surgery at the University of San Diego and the University of Pepperdine.

Currently, Dr. Brooks serves as the Dean of Nursing at San Diego City College. Her passion for studying weight loss outcomes in the bariatric community comes from her personal experience. Her YouTube name is Professor Nurse Rae where she has documented her own personal journey. Dr. Brooks considers herself lucky to be surrounded by love and support from the bariatric surgery community.
