"My knees hurt, my back hurt and I had high blood pressure. I was pre-diabetic. I was going down a bad path," said Aimee Smith.
When Wisconsin Mom Aimee Smith finally got the courage to weigh herself one day, she was shocked to learn that she weighed 427 pounds.
"I sat and cried. I had no idea I had gotten that heavy," Aimee said."Everything hinged back upon my weight. Depression, my knees hurting, and not being able to move. I figured I would be the 600 pound bedridden mom."
Amy decided to fight for her life and elected to have gastric bypass surgery. She changed her lifestyle, her eating habits, and worked out at her local YMCA. She signed up for the "couch to 5k" program twice, learned to swim, and run and the rest is history!
These days, Amy is certainly no couch potato! One year later, she is now a triathlete and has hopes to one day complete in an Iron Man triathlon.
"There's a group of us out there who have had weight loss surgery who are athletes now." she says. She catches herself and there is a slight pause. Yes, she said she was an athlete. Finally, she feels comfortable enough to say it out loud!
